Default Any runners here?

I know that there are some people who work out, but any one who seriously runs???

Ive been sidelined with injuries for a while, but now I am trying to get back in to doing half-marathons. WHen I stopped 2 years ago, I had completed four half-marathons in four different states:

Kentucky (Derby - Louisville)
Ohio (Flying Pig - Cincinnati)
Indiana (Marine Corps - Indianapolis
Michigan (International - Detroit) - by far my favorite and my PR of 2:10 (went across the river into Canada for 6 miles and even had an underground tunnel portion which was really cool)

Now looking at several others and I need OPINIONS please:

late November - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
early November - Marshall University, WV

Both of these are cool places and cool runs. Both are fairly flat courses.

Any one here know???

I don't run, but my brother does.

He runs the Heart Mini-Marathon every march, and the annual Turkey Day (10K) run: http://thanksgivingdayrace.com/

I run six miles a day during my lunch hour, try to make it five days a week but something always comes up and I get three or four days in (weekends off). Not a racer by any stretch but in fairly decent shape. My last race (10K) was 10th. place out of 1,500 runners and my time was 7:23 min/miles. Keep in mind this was for my age group for 45 - 55 year olds / mens division. Not bad but not terrific either, I was proud of my accomplishment and that is all that matters to me. My daily runs average 7:40's. I do not consider myself a runner, just a guy that runs during his lunch hour, nothing more.

I run with my wife in the morning. I ran a 10k in the spring and a 5k 2 weeks ago.

Default A word to the wise ...

No Carole, I do NOT run anymore. When you reach your mid-60s and both knees have been ruined, about the only thing you can do is get a good walking workout program going.

I was an avid runner in my 30s up through my 40's. Mainly 10k races, and an occasional 10 miler. Made the serious mistake of running on concrete sidewalks and asphalt streets ... NOT good for the knees! Got a few 10k times in the 43:30 range (~7 min/mile) in my early 40s, but quit when the knees gave out (50 yo).

My word to the wise ... stay off the hard surfaces and run on packed ground or at least something that gives a little. I miss it still ...

Ogre

My wife is a runner. She's run in 6 marathons. Mostly the Marine Corps. She runs 7 miles 3 days a week and 16 miles on Satutday. On the weekends she and her buds run the trails. Says it's easier on the joints. Jon

I run both of those from time to time. The Thanksgiving Day race is a must-do. Love starting the day with a 6 mile run so I can eat guilt free for the rest of the day.

I am not a "runner" per say... more of a jogger. Fastest mile I ever ran was 8 1/2 minutes and that it not considered fast.

Never liked run'n, but used to do bike marathons years ago.
Aywhere from 50 to 150 milers.
No strain on bones, and alot less on joints.

I love running but now that I'm at the edge of 40 my body keeps telling me to give it up. I look back on things now and think moderation is a good thing. Marathons to me are exstreamly hard on the body and joints. Going into the golden years with bad knees, ankles and compressed discs is no way to go through life. I still try and run a couple miles every other day if I can and love to bike too but the bike just doesn't get the heart racing like a run does.

I am running the Prefontaine Memorial run the 18th. I am sure I will learn a little humility. There will be some fast runners!

How many of you guys are still Running 10 years later?
If you do work out, what is your routine?

I've been running for about 17 years. Some biking, but not much in recent years. Getting a little tougher & starting to slow down a bit now in my 50's though. As far as wear & tear goes, I think injury & genetics primarily kills the knees & running does wear them out a little quicker, but it general I feel better from working out. I know people that have junk knees that have never run a day since high school & know guys running life long thousands of miles since high school have no issues at all. Its a crap shoot imo.

At some point I'll have to stop lacing up & find something else to do, but I have no idea what........

I still do in the warmer weather, but at 54 my speed and distance isn’t what it used to be! When I was 40 I did 40-50 miles a week. Now I’m lucky to get 10. Part of that is that I’ve switched over to mostly cycling. It’s a lot easier on my lower body.

Started running 10 years ago, in my late 40's, and still run quite a bit. I run probably 4-6 half marathons per year, 5-6 10k's and a lot of 5k's. I ran 950 miles last year. I joined a local tri club and did the inaugural Traverse City Iron Man 70.3 last August, my second tri event ever. I am doing that again in August and Grand Rapids tri in June. May try doing a marathon but not sure. The Free Press International in October is fun but I have been starting to do more trail running. There is a nice trail run in May at Stony Creek in Washington Twp MI. They do a 5k, 10k and half marathon. It is a good time as there are a lot of support and fun on the half course. Our tri club, Infinite Multisport Triathlon Club, IMTC , has around 600 members and is a lot of fun. We had 250 members race at Traverse City last August for the Iron Man. We were 10% of the total field. If you are ever around let me know. There is another group I run with that is predominately trail runners and they do lots of events. They are Move It Fitness, in Rochester MI. and they are a lot of fun. They do ultras and other crazy endurance races in some of the local parks.

I wish I could run. Tried it off and on and it’s not something I enjoy. I was supposed to do a 5k at a trade show in March, but training for it I could tell it wasn’t going to work out.

I still do old school weights and boring cardio on the elliptical.

The Low T treatment helps a lot. I checked in on the body scan today at 223 w/16% body fat. I’m content with that but feel and look better at 210/14% which is my March goal.

Question for the runners : I have never in my life been comfortable running. I have walked on my toes my entire life and have abnormally large calves. To the point where strangers ask what I do for them (the answer is nothing). After trying to run these past few weeks I am wondering if my legs could simply be ‘out of balance’ making it more difficult?

Look for a running shop and ask them for suggestions about shoes. It makes a huge difference. There are so many differences in drop and cushioning it is surprising. I am lucky as a local store here is Hansens in the metro Detroit area. . They are local runners who train many runners around the country. Desi, who won the Boston Marathon a couple of years ago, was training with them. They are excellent to get advice from. They have a mat that you step on and it shows your foot print and the pressure areas. Then they can start looking at shoes that would fit your running style. They will also have you run on a tread mill in the store to look at your form. Getting the correct shoe for your style makes a big deal. You might find it is not so bad running when you are comfortable .

I'm a car guy trapped in a runner's body.

I ran the Chicago Marathon in 2012, and the Detroit (International) in 2013.

It's not something that I would like to do again.

You marathoners amaze me! While I have been running for 17 years, I am a runner by force. Meaning, it didn't come easy. Lots of calf & foot pains & when I first started & I could barely run two blocks. My first 5k was a big deal. Now I run 4-5 miles which I do every other day & have minimal issues or pains, but it honestly took years before I truly got used to it. I think the body has a way of adapting once it realizes your not going to stop doing it. I run because I am lazy. I say that because I just have to put my gear on at 6:00am & get out the door. 40 minutes I am back home, & shower up for work. For you guys that can lift weights & do the elliptical, I give you a lot of credit. That takes way more discipline than running imo.

I run about 45-50 miles a month. A little less this time of year because of the environment. Can't stand the Dreadmill, 20 minutes on that thing feels like an hour.

Trained to do a half marathon 2 years ago & its been on my bucket list. But couldn't get past 10 miles. each time I was in agony & could barely walk the next day, so I gave that idea up for now. Just don;t have an efficient running style I suppose. cardio wise, no problem At 52, my best running days are behind me & my easy pace has fallen about 30-40 seconds a mile which makes me sad, but I quit fighting it. There's a reason the 50-60 age groups don't have huge turn outs. Its hurts a bit after 50!

1965gp, If you really want to go after it, I like Jerry's idea of getting pointers from a specialist. many will have you run on a treadmill to look at your gait, or mechanics.

That being said though. I am a firm believer in wearing a show that is comfortable, not one that is supposed to fit your form . I had been told by everyone under the sun I am a semi mild pronater & needed controlled, firm shoes. Did that for about 6 years & one day was reading about wearing shoes that feel right. Tried a bunch on & found that natural cushioned shoes felt the best & I have never looked back. My legs had never felt that good before the switch.
