Leaky PS pump
I'm trying to get my power steering pump to stop leaking fluid. I replaced the lines which I thought were the cause but it's still leaking. I'm thinking it is the seal on the cap or an internal seal that's leaking.
I was looking this morning on advance auto and I see a rebuild kit is available for $17, or I can get a rebuilt pump of unknown quality for $57. I'm wondering about the complexity of rebuilding the pump. Is this difficult? Any suggestions are appreciated, my driveway will thank you it's sick and tired of being leaked on. Thanks.

Go on YouTube look under power steering pump rebuild. You will see one for a wary model Chevrolet late 60’s early 70’s. Simple to do hope it helps.

First, you need to locate exactly where the fluid is coming from. Spray the box down with Brakleen, take an air line and blow it dry, then start the car and work the wheel back & forth a few times. If its coming from the sector shaft its likely the shaft has severe pitting or a groove and needs to be replaced.

I rebuilt my pump a couple of months ago, seemed pretty straightforward. I've bled it and spun it up with a drill .... no leaks so far. Only high pressure point is the outlet fitting I think. Case to pump seal, and front shaft seal are both low pressure I think.

It's probably the large 'O' ring that seals the stamped steel tank to the pump itself. I rebuilt mine from an $11 kit I got online 10 years ago and it hasn't leaked a drop. Took longer to remove it from the car and re-install it than it did to overhaul the pump. It was a fun benchtop project, and I got to keep my original '67 pump, too.

If the outer case of the pump is distorted, dented bent .... can be tough to seal it to the pump with the big o-ring. I'd also suggest it's the likeliest culprit.

The kit reseals the pump to the reservoir. Take a few pics from different angles with flash, should be able to tell where it's coming from,
chit runs downhill....unless it's a pressurized leak! If you overfill reservoir it it will leak out the cap, it is vented and the level rises as the system warms up. |

One thing to keep in mind, the fan has a habit of moving leaked fluid towards the back of the pump.
PS pump, not box. It's even in the title of this thread. |

Not a difficult job. As some have said, pay attention to the large o ring sealing the reservoir. I'd much rather rebuild my own than take a chance on a rebuilt one.

I got the kit and yanked the pump off the car. About to tear it down

The only problem I had was re-assembly of the relief valve (discharge side). I didn't assemble it correctly and had absolutely no boost after installing the pump and priming. Very simple mistake, but a PITA to fix--drain it, take it off the car, reassemble, clean up the oil mess. I did that twice before I looked at another spare pump and saw my error. Can't remember details, but warn you to pay attention when taking that valve out.

I usually go with the "if it ain't broke don't fix it", but my original pump and lines finally moved into the must-repair zone last month. I had seeping from both high and low pressure hoses and replaced those. Fluid under the car went from a noticeable puddle to a quarter sized spot on the floor. At least now I can see that the front shaft seal is dry and it does appear to be the large O-ring. I plan on ordering out just the re-seal kit since the pump still works fine even in parking situations.
One of our members here (Wheelspin) along with a friend built a test apparatus to measure pump output, and what they found was none of the rebuilt pumps were really putting out decent pressure. Their thinking was that once the pump was worn, the standard rebuild procedures just didn't do that much good. They tested and went with a new AGR pump. Cardone also has a new pump and at half the price of an AGR it might be a good compromise.

I have no idea where my PS pump was leaking but this stopped it 3 years ago.

I've never had luck getting the pump to reservoir to seal, I gave up on rebuilding them. Just buy a replacement with the reservoir. If it doesn't work or leaks, return it.
It might take a few to get one that doesn't leak or works right, but you will be glad you replaced it. Save the flow valve off the one you have, and reuse it on the replacement pump. Just make sure they are the same type. .

Use power steering fluid and not ATF, too.

My 78s original was leaking from the shaft so I bought a replacement. The valve in it was stuck hard! And there was fluid lubing it. Had to break it loose tapping on it to swap valves. Swapped on a billet pulley and now have a squeal the old leaky one did not!
So be sure even in a new one the valve can move.

I ended up getting the pump rebuilt and it works well. No leaks yet and it was a relatively easy job. I did put ATF in it. Is this a No-No? If so how do I get the system properly flushed out?
