Default 70 GTO windshield

Before putting the windshield back in didn't know if there's anything can be done for some slight pitting from what looks like sandblasting from the years. If the sun is just right you can really see it...makes the windshield a little hard to see though. I'm thinking maybe put a new windshield in if there's nothing can be done to help the original.

There's not much you can do for pitting. It is possible to polish the glass with cerium oxide (kits are available from various suppliers) but it's generally meant for only removing very light scratches; to remove pitting would take forever, and would most likely leave distortions in the glass.

For less than $300 you can have one installed. I had mine out and it was ok, but previous owner put some sanding scratches in it. Plus you could see a bit of delamination around the edges once I got it out. I figured for the cost to have a new one put in for me, I wasn't going to buy materials to install the old one myself.

Get anew one installed unless you're concerned with correct date coded glass. You can get one with the antenna embedded also.

I figured there was nothing to fix it but with new tech these days you never know. Probably just put new glass in it with the antenna in it. Dated glass i guess really isnt going to matter.

Auto City Classic can add date codes to replacement glass for an extra fee, if you like.

By 100-150k miles or so, windshields are done. Not only is there a bad haze, especially at night with on-coming car headlights, the safety coating is compromised.

I generally replace windshields every 5-7 years as SOP.

IMO, polishing is a waste of time, you basically have to polish the coating, and if the damage is past the coating, and into the glass, well, you get the idea.

I've seen people polish their' windshields and end up with areas where the glass, when looking through it, has a distorted/fish-eye effect. Same with spot repairs.

Not many things are better, than seeing the world through a new windshield.

I agree. Actually, it's amazing what new side glass does for clarity too. I had a side glass on my 'bird break with someone zealously slamming the door with it all the way up. Replaced it, and it made all the other glass look 'bad'.

I recently bought a whole new set of glass thru Ames for the judge tribute project, forget the actual brand, but wow, what a difference. You don't realize it until you actually change it out how very different it is.

Too bad you're not closer, I have both 1/4 glass brand new, with all the tracks etc installed, which was ordered by mistake, I'm using green A/C glass. I would give them to you for free.

I will look, I may still have the shipping packaging, but I don't think so.

Actually, I still have the original packaging, but the glass only has the pre-installed chrome trim.

Want to ask this before I order a windshield. Are the windshield options only either all clear or clear with a tinted top? Are there windshields that the whole glass itself is a different color? My GTO has windshield antenna and no tint at the top... original windshield and I want the replacement to look like that. My GTO didn't come with the dark soft Ray window option.

My understanding is that first, no windshield comes with any tint, softray green or grey, they only come clear. Just figured I'd state that.

So yes, the only options are with or without the tinted top section. Not sure I've even seen one without the tinted top section, never really paid attention to that. But if it's listed that way, then guess it's available.

Auto City Classic lists either all clear, or with a green shade band. https://www.autocityclassic.com/1970...-hardtop/coupe

Auto metal direct also shows (pics) a all clear windshield or a windshield that seems to have a green tint to the whole thing and a tint strip across the top. Im assumimg the windshield that looks like it has a all green tint to it is part of the soft ray glass option. So it looks like the one I should get is the all clear with antenna.

I made it a personal law; always use a new windshield (Tinted & Shaded) on my car projects. 68 GTOs, 69 Bird, 68 Bird, 70 Judges.

Luckly they all had Tinted & Shaded, and luckly I could BUY NEW for very reasonable prices.

I trust that such Windshields still AVAIL.

I think Ive seen before on a GTO (70 I think) window sticker that it showed "tinted windshield only". I guess that was a option was to get regular glass in your car but opt for a tinted windshield?

I just looked again and saw code A02 windshield only tinted but I think it was older than 70.

AMD doesn't have clear with antenna right now but they do have tinted green with antenna. Opinions on whether to go original clear or go tinted? Its a fairly original car but not taking to shows and worrying about scores and that stuff.

Have you checked with any of your local glass suppliers? Most of the mainstream shops either don't deal w/older vehicles or will price them higher.
I just got a PGW w/s for my 72 TA thru a local smaller shop, tinted/shaded/w antenna. It took a little over a week to get it but that was thru Christmas & New Year holidays.
It's worth a few calls anyway.

I just had new windows installed in my 72 TA clone and wow do they make the side glass look bad.

185 for the windshield and 85 in labor for the rear window I had to get it from a local restoration shop). That included them installing the trim.

Came to my house and did it in the driveway
