Default Serial Number on Rear End?

I know that the last digits of the car's serial number can be found on the engine block and the transmission. I found them on my '77 Trans Am. I also heard that they can be found on the rear end. If that's true, where would it be? I just rebuilt my rear end from scratch, and I don't remember ever seeing any such numbers stamped on there.

No.

No vehicle serial number on the rear axle assembly.

There are probably supplier markings, which could include part number/broadcast code, date codes, lot numbers or other internal supplier designations for identification and process flow.

Agree with Keith. There is a number on the rear but it says what Keith says as well as tells what the ratio is.

rear will usually have a 2 letter code denoting ratio. Lightly stamped so often it disappears with age.
