What I thought would be there is like in your link, with the PHS for the more option pic.

Notice it has the WW5 option as 704
Thought the Sport Option if it was 734 would be shown on it?

Here is what I have for the 734 option:
VE5 - 734 - Protective Rubber Bumper Strips (71-73)
(VE5 is UPC, like the WW5 above)

Since this blue car has the endura bumper there would be no need for the bumper strips. (for the chrome bumper)

So maybe they did change the option sometime during the year?
(I show Sport Option as W70 UPC)

This PHS you have attached is a D37 Hardtop LeMans with the GTO option, so it wouldn't have the LeMans sport option. You couldn't have both. Notice it does have the 654 Custom Trim option. That is the option for bucket seats when you also spec'd the Gto option 334.

The WW5 option did not mandate having buckets, but I imagine most of them also ordered buckets with it... the 654 option.

The only difference is the '72 versions had a diecast LeMans or GTO emblem installed up high centered on each door panel.

When a '72 LeMans Hardtop or Coupe was ordered with the GTO option, the standard trim level door panels had a diecast GTO emblem. When a '72 LeMans Hardtop was ordered with the GTO option and the Sport interior, the upper scale door panels pullstraps, the '71-72 style GTO door panel emblems were not used.

Over the years there have been owners that installed the swirled style GTO emblems on their '72 "Sport" style door panels. Many years ago, had a local that swiped one of the very nice condition original GTO door panel emblems from an original door panel from my '71 Judge project. That door panel was setting on a work table in my garage. That emblem ended up (with another one that he had come up years before) on the "Sport" door panels in his beater '72 T41 LeMans. Needless to say, I was not very happy about the stolen emblem, & it took over a year working big swappers to find a nice used pair of '71 GTO doorpanels to remove the pristine original swirled style GTO emblems. Little incidents like that are the big reason I don't have an open door policy here for locals throwing together who knows what, to come over & look at parts.
Thanks for the info Roger. You're right, there were only 6855 D27 Post LeMans with only 134 of those having the GTO option. Not a ton for sure, my bad.

Having never had a D27 post car, so confirm you're saying a D27 post and a D37 hardtop, when not ordered with buckets, used the same door panel? Only the emblem changed.

Regarding my original question in the first post... do you have any insight on how you ordered the 734 LeMans sport option when it wasn't on the order form or accessorizer catalog?
Jeff

OK, here goes. Kinda conjecture on my part but I can find no other way one could have ordered the "Sport" option . . .

The order book lists all of the available interior trim codes, and of course the bucket seat trim codes differ from the same color interior with a front bench seat.

Therefore I must assume that if one ordered the bucket seat interior trim code that the car received the entire "Sport" package.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it, LOL!

Of interest, Eric White's book shows the 734 option, along with the UPC "W70". A scan of the appropriate page is attached.

I remember the Pontiac info said you cant get the sport option with the gt option. I wondered why this was, but I have one and both are listed on the phs.

Well I've seen plenty of GTs with bench guts, and several with buckets. There was no constraint on ordering buckets (which included the 724 option) on a WU2 GT car.

Lloyd, sounds like the most plausible explanation so far! Another thing that backs your theory is that no where on the 72 Order form is the 654 Custom Trim option, only in the accessory catalog. The 734 Sport option wasn't on either form or catalog. I guess I'm wondering if I'm sitting in front of my salesperson in 1972 and say "I want black bucket seats on my D37 LeMans ", he circles 761 for black buckets, what triggers that option code 734 LeMans Sport/W70 be added? And additionally, if I sat down and ordered a D37 LeMans and wanted the 334 Gto option and then said "I want black bucket seats" he would also circle 761 and apparently that would automatically trigger the 654 "Custom trim" (same price as the 734 sport option). I'm just curious who/how those different options got added to the order going to the factory? Guess we may never know.

Just another note that most of you guys know already, ALL '72 LeMans 'verts were LeMans Sports.

I'm curious as to where it says you couldn't get both? Not on the order form.

A build sheet or broadcast sheet for a bucket seat '72 LeMans would tell the tale. I'll see if I can scrounge one up . . .

Question

OK, I just checked out a real nice clear build sheet I have for a '72 WW5 GTO, assembled at the Lakewood (Georgia) plant..

It shows Dark Saddle A51 buckets but no mention of the W70 or 724 "Sport" option whatsoever.

But since it was also ordered with the Gto option, I bet it has the 654 Custom Trim on the invoice, right?

Are you able to scan a copy of that page? Curious to see what it says. Also, does that sales book mention how they would order the 734 Sport option when it wasn't on the dealer order form?

Thanks Lyn! I assume the PHS invoice lists it on there as well like pggto's?
