Default My other '70

Here's a pic of my other 70. It has brand new stock replacement springs from AMES in the front.... It also has rear springs purchased at ESPO.com as 2" over stock.

Most people would agree this has too much rake... back is too high, and I agree.

Getting the right stance with springs is difficult, I can see why people take the easy way out and use air shocks.

Do you know the rear spring numbers that you bought from ESPO? They look more than 2 inches over stock. You can get the springs from bigger cars to work on 67 and later cars. I think if you put the CC501 springs in the back of the blue car, it will lower the back of the car.

I removed a set of rear springs from a 69 GTO that had 10 inch wide wheels and big tires that stuck out past the wheel wells. I had to use a pry bar to remove the springs because the suspension was maxed out. I still have the springs, I used them in back of a 67 El Camino to see what it would do. I had to use a spring compressor to get them in. It maxed out the rear suspension on that also. I have no idea of the origin of the springs.

I dug through my pile of receipts for the blue car and found the ESPO invoice. Those 2" over stock springs... are cc507.

cc507 seems more like 6 inches over stock to me

i don't know why this has to be so difficult. i was going to buy the stock springs from espo for my 68 gto conv. ($60.00), but now i'm not sure. i like a little stance but not too much. maybe i'll try the stock plus 1" over if they make it. any more info would be helpful. i'm not sure what stock height was like in '68

That has to be a good 4-6" over stock height, not just a couple.

The picture in my Moog catalog shows the cargo coils have the tighter windings at the top.

I grabbed this catalog (1986 copyright) about 8 years ago so I could do some 'homework'.

Ken, do you know the wire diameter of the CC501...the catalog doesn't list it.

The reason I ask is that I put in some .565" wire coils and it's just too stiff to go to the track and have any traction with my current tires.

The instructions that came with my 501's also said the tigher windings go at the top

Getmy goat,

What are your tire sizes all around? I have a '72 vert that has 235/60/15 on the front and 275/60/15 on the back and will be replacing the rear coils on. I like the stance on your vert, I think my 275s on the rear will raise it just enough to get the rake I want.

I don't know the wire diameter, they look like they are powder coated. My calipers need a battery. When I get the engine in my wagon, I will take some pictures. The front springs already have a coil removed. The rear springs are stock and it has air shocks. I will take pictures of both springs side by side and what the wagon looks like with the CC501 springs installed.

The free height of the CC501 spring is 14 inches. The 65 rear spring in the picture have a free height of about 12.75 inches

I called ESPO and asked them what the next step up from cc-501 was (they claimed cc-501 was stock for GTO).

They say cc-651 is the next step up..but not as high as cc-507 which is pictured earler w/ my blue GTO.

I'm ordering some cc-651s and will post pics when installed.

That might be the number. I remember it was six something, I thought it was CC625. If I remember right they are 2 inches taller than the CC501. I don't know if they are variable rate. When you get them can you measure the free height before you install them? Also measure the springs you remove from your car.

I found the answer to be .610" wire diameter, according ot Fireball at:

The CC501 springs are 12.62 inches high and have a wire diameter of .610, the CC625 springs are 14.00 inches high and have a wire diameter of .656. The CC625 is a stiffer spring because it uses a larger wire diameter.

Unless they are changing numbers around, the CC501 springs I have are 14 inches tall, I measured them yesterday. I believe those numbers posted were taken from a spring chart. I won't be able to get a true reading on the wire diameter because of the powder coating.

I bought a set of the CC501 springs from Carquest, when I opened the box I noticed they were not variable rate. I returned the springs and bought another set from Northern Auto Parts. This time they sent me the correct springs. I know that Carquest reboxes the springs and uses the Moog part numbers. They had both the CC501 number in the book and the CC509 number, I believe the CC509 is the old number for heavy duty GTO rear springs.

As much as I can gather, Just about all the Pontiac A bodies used the same type of spring in the rear. They just changed the mounting. When the CC501 top pig tail is cut off, it becomes the same height as a stock 65 spring. The stock springs in the wagon I have don't look like they are extra beefy or any taller than the 65 springs. I believe the 78 and up Olds G body cars were the first cars avalable from the factory with rear variable rate springs, that's all the info I can find. For the price of the CC501 springs there is not much else anyone can do to their car to see a noticable difference, that much money might buy a tank of gas.

Getmygoat is the missing link in some of the puzzle now, he has 2 cars and can measure the difference. I will take some pictures of a 68 wagon and a 70 Lemans with stock rear springs in the car. the pictures will be with the weight on the springs.
