I hope they don't mess them up and do a real restoration on them.

Article is BS and hype for the show. These two cars have been discussed on the first gen site for over a year:

I agree. The article is complete B.S. fabricated to get peoples attention. They are telling everyone what they want to hear because the true story of how they acquired the cars is not nearly as appealing.

It's interesting but my feeling is this, I'd rather have a real documented RA II car any day of the week over Firebird #1.

I think that goes without saying for just about anyone here.

RAII car over Firebird #2... agreed.

But Firebird number 1 from 67 is the first Firebird...EVER. And yes I know they didn't necessarily "roll off the line" in order, but at this point it would likely be impossible to establish what the real sequence was, so VIN 001 gets the nod.

That makes it pretty special, IMO. And it may not be a RA car, but it's not a 6-cylinder coupe, either.

Well said.

...Reality is all a matter of perspective. With T.V. shows and movies, the cardinal rule is it has to have conflict. Otherwise it's not interesting. But sometimes they get carried away. I hope those cars didn't get the usual "Ass Monkey" treatment. I've been to Sue's shop -- she's pretty cool.

It's a hoax.
They were discussed on this site last year when they were on ebay.
http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=713219

Sold to a guy in CT.
http://collectorcarpricetracker.com/.../251181108990/

Fake deadline - why would you need them in you collection in 60 days if they haven't been there for 45+ years???

I highly doubt it's the restoration that either deserved and lots of original evidence was lost....

Doesn't a proper restoration, let alone a concours one, require that frame and undercarriage components be restored as well? I noticed that the frame and suspension parts were painted without having any of the pitting addressed. Seen this many times.

Sad but not surprising. Being a DarkSider, I don't get too wrapped up in the A or F body drama around the 1-of's or rare/early build discoveries.

That said (well, typed), I have watched this show from time to time, but I don't regularly watch TV and if the show lacks the integrity to stoop to this level, I will apply THAT time to either the Performance Years or the Classical Pontiac Forums.

Default agreed.....

a lot of hype... a 68 RAII trumps them.. I'm into 69 RAIVs, would not trade for a 350 car, no matter #1, or last #.. imo

More ink...

Just so I understand (...maybe I'm not alone) why has it been determined here that this is a hoax?

Because the cars have been known about for several years.

They were offered for sale here -without much interest (except for spawning several threads and a bunch of commentary) - before being sent to ebay.

At least two PY members are familiar with their complete history, viewed the cars before they went to ebay to assess the condition and value, and are preparing formal documentation supporting their findings.

All of the hype surrounding the "barn find" aspect, the restored value and "time crunch" for the restoration is all BS.

Post Hoax

So the criticism relates to the show's handling of the 'discovery', not that the cars aren't what they have been described to represent? I have less of a problem with the TV marketing part. Glad to hear the cars are authentic; that's what matters more to the enthusiast. I haven't seen the episode yet, but too bad if the restoration wasn't handled with a view to preserving rare period data. No matter what, this is a really cool find.

Correct.

There is no question that these are VIN #1 and VIN #2 of the regular production run (not hand made, not prototypes).
