Default '66 Tripower on '68 Firebird 400

This question is for those of you that run Tripower on your first-gen Firebird.

Our '68 has a 400 hood. We're building a 467 stroker with E-Heads for the 'Bird. We have a '66 aluminum repro manifold that we'd like to use, but need to know about clearance for air cleaners and Ram Air pan.

I remember when my '67 'Bird was new, there were quite a few of them in Milwaukee with Tripower added. I just don't remember what they used for air cleaners and if they used a Ram Air pan.

The distance from the front lip of the manifold (the surface that meets with the cyl. head) to the top of the foam is 9 1/4". In the rear of the manifold, it's 11".

The filters fit with room to spare when I ran my trips. I dont think the tri-power intake is any taller than the factory 2 or 4 bbl intake. Of course test fit the clearances first but I think you'll be fine.

Thanks. I like your '68 and your TA.

Your info means the Ram Air pan will probably work, too. The foam is 1" above the tops of the air cleaners, so it may fit under the stock Firebird Ram Air hood plate.

That would be a really nice setup!

Thanks! I wanted to do that for a while (ram air pans) but I didn't have the correct fuel lines or the pans so I never pulled the trigger and eventually went with the 4bbl ram air.
It would have been cool though!

years ago I ran a 66 setup on one of my 68 HO birds. everything fit perfectly with factory air cleaners and it ran really good.

quicksilver97ta,

If you can, please measure the clearance from the top of the air cleaner to the hood. I don't know how this can be done, but it would really help us making a decision on manifold, Ram Air, air cleaners, etc.

Thanks to both you and muscle collector for the info!
