067 to a 068 cam?
I looking to go from a 067 to a 068 cam. Any other suggestions? My car is a '67 GP 428 4speed ram air exhaust/x pipe 3:42 out back. What kind of performance gains would there be? Low, Mid, High end? I have a sticking lifter when cold and going to replace the lifters one day soon. Along with a cam upgrade. Scott

IME,mid to high end gains, and you may not be happy with the loss of low end grunt in a heavy car.
I actually liked my '72 455 H-O GTO better when it had the 067 cam in it than when I replaced it with the "original" H-O 455 cam. (had a jobber rebuilt shortblock in it when I bought it) I especially noticed the loss of low end grunt as the car was 4000+ lbs with a TH400 w/3.08 rear gears. An aftermarket 068 "clone" cam may be a better choice as the modern lobes are designed to adjust for that sorta thing and give a broader powerband as SOP. FWIW Bret P. |

Tough call. The cars I've driven with the 067 cam seem down in power, and while I agree that the 068 will move everything up on the RPM scale, I'd guess that the missing torque would be way, way down low. Wasn't the original 068 on a 114.5 LSA?
My '65 Bonne has a 455 that has the 067 cam in it, and it destroys both tires off the line for about 35 feet, but then it starts wheezing and is pretty much done. I had picked up a Crower 60916 cam for it that I was guessing would let the tires live a little better off the line, but carry the power out further. A friend made me an offer on the Crower cam and I sold it - so don't know if my guessing would have been on the money or not. The Bonne still has the 067 in it, and definitely nothing really wrong with that setup (that's with the 3.08 posi rear).

I wouldn´t hesitate to use the 068, especially with the 3.42 gears.
Power is +500 rpm´s from the 067. I´m no fan of the "modern" grinds, as most of them builds to much dynamic compression in the mids for a high compression engine and ping them to death. For low compression engines those "modern" grinds are modern. |

I like the 068 cam a lot, but in my mind, there is not enough difference in performance to change the 067 out, unless you are going to do it anyway. I've run the 068 cam in my '67 GTO convertible for the past 20-odd years (400, TH400) and love it. It worked well when I ran a 3.36 rear gear, and it works well now with a 2.56 gear out back. It seems to have plenty of torque at low rpm.

My car still has High compression and does ping. Unless I use some Torco octane booster. My car does get out of the hole just fine. Might just chance out the lifters at this point? Scott

Given a high compression 428 I think you'll be just fine. The 068 is really a pretty mild cam and you have3.42 gears and the 4-speed to make up for any loss of low end (the clutch is your "stall converter.")
Don't put new lifters on that old cam.

I was thinking the same thing ,new lifters and a new cam. I'm sure my cam is the original unit? Sounds like the 068 might wake up my motor even more, along with the exhaust I'm using.
