your note to self should be....

never let anyone negotiate anything for you but...you...

more guys have lost stuff because their buddy was gonna do this or that...dont blame your friend for screwing the pooch..take it as a lesson to rely on yourself..if you saw the car before it sold you missed the opportunity to buy it....life lesson learned....i missed a 71 Judge cuz my buddy was gonna do the deal..never again will i give the reins to my future to another...

the Judge was 1800 bux......yes $1800.00 the decimal point is in the right place..i knew it was an HO car after i got the PHS back i freaked..but too late, my buddy drug his feet and some one else got it...my life lesson right there

and i dont share info anymore either..my buddy told all his other car buddies i knew it was an HO car and thats where i probably lost the car..when i have determined i dont want it..then i give the info away

I heard Vic died a few years ago..i cant remember who told me...or if its even accurate info..maybe Dave Trokey told me..they where buddies

My buddy found the cars, I was just supplying money. He didn't see much value in 69's since he is into 65's. Just not his thing. I could have circumvented him and done the deal myself and risk losing a friendship. Just wasn't worth it for some money!

Default Update

So I decided to start removing engine items to clean and repaint, then I removed the carb to install a correct V Holley and found the intake needed a helicoil so I removed the intake. Removed the valve covers to take a peek inside and noticed the push rod guide plates were installed incorrectly strike one, then decided to remove the valley pan and noticed they installed hydraulic lifters on a #545713 V solid lifter cam so that`s strike two. Pulled the fuel pump out and the timing chain was real sloppy strike three, so out came the engine & trans. A little disappointing when I removed the oil pan and saw regular 4 bolt mains, then miked the cylinders @ 4.120. Bottom line is it`s a 400 Ram V standard bore with a really rare Pontiac 3" main 455 Kellogg stroker crank #484646 see pg215 in Pete`s book. Crank is std. & std. so that`s cool. Has dished ??? pistons and 455 SD rods. Also pulled the rear end cover off and it does have a posi with the GM 3:42 gears but the posi unit is weak. Thinking of putting it back together with a close ratio 4 speed and 4:33 gears, and of course with flat tops so I have to use 12 buck a gallon 110 fuel. KC

That's just a damn shame - I feel your pain.

Let me know if I should grab my trailer & get it out of there for you.

Default Ram V

It`s the same stock GM Ram V cam that was in there, I sent it out to Delta Cams to get reground and parkerized. The last pic of the front of the cam has a V on it but is real hard to get a good pic. I`ll add another pic of the front of the cam. This time the correct SD-R/A V solid lifters I got from you Tom are gonna go on the cam not Rhodes lifters like were in there. The same 455 stroker crank is also going in with a set of Ram V connecting rods courtesy of Chuck Henley with new ARP hardware. NOS TRW forged 455 std bore pistons courtesy of Paul Kippen. The block is now 4.150 with the stroker crank it is now a 455.

Default Ram V

Sorry Paul I misspelled your name, I got the pistons from fellow P/Y member Paul Knippen. OK so the short block is all together, clearance's all checked within spec so next is to install one head and check for piston to valve clearance. I know someone is going to comment about the windage tray but that is the correct Ram V set-up according to my research. It had a 3/4 windage tray in it but my goal is to be as factory correct as I can be just like my SD cars. You can see in the pic of the oil filter mounting surface that a 5 in a circle is stamped into it.

That crank is about as ugly as my 366 NASCAR crank! Both my 4in and 4.21 stroke Kelloggs cranks were pristine.Tom

Wow glad to have caught sight of this thread !
Congrats to you Aluminum Chief , and thanks for sharing the findings with us.

Would like to ask a few things for curiosity sake and historical sake.

: Was the casting number 545288 ?

: Does the block face have any stampings such as DS-1101 etc... ? ,
or
an Engine Unit Number with WY code ?

: Did the block weigh in significantly heavier than normal ?

Trying to understand if maybe this was an experimental block that went out the back door or if it was an intended production / crate engine block.

BVZ The block casting #545687, EUN 0847419, Engine code WY but you can see someone stamped a W over the Y. I did not notice any weight difference but did not weigh it. KC.

Did it have a partial VIN on it?

Looks like an awesome project.

No partial vin, I think the block originally had only the WY stamping and that small x with the circle around it and then someone wanted the engine to appear somewhat original in their car so they stamped the W over the Y and added the EUN also. That`s what it looks like to me.
