Waiting for the slick sand to dry. Love that stuff and the dry guide coat.

How long can that go before it has to be sealed with something?

Slick sand is done. Time to clean up the garage and get ready for the 2k primer.

Same as body filler but has a shell when it dries. If you don't knock off the shell then less likely to absorb moisture. Once sanded.....more likely so if it's humid where you live then you might want to cover it with 2k primer sooner than later.

Super dry where I live so not really an issue for me. I think I sprayed mine in January and haven't sprayed the 2k yet. Getting close....pretty hard to put down the sandpaper. Just need to focus and get moving ahead.

Thanks .... I'll probably end up doing fenders, hood etc. individually. I like the process Droptop is using ... seems like something I can wrap my head around without panic.

To give you an idea of the properties of Slick Sand, years ago when it first came to my attention, my Body Supply guy showed me a little Jack-o-Lantern that was molded out of pure Slick Sand. A little larger than a golf ball and a little smaller than a tennis ball.
He took it, threw it fairly hard on the concrete floor and caught it when it bounced back up. There wasn't a chip on it.
I had read some pretty negative things about it over the years, on this site, and did not really want to use it on my car but my painter did tell me he used it on at least the quarters and roof. So far, I have had no issues with it. It's been about 6 years.

Purely, what are you speaking of when you say 2K? Surfacing primer? I don't think it seals anything either. If you're speaking of epoxy, yes.

According to my paint suppliers, a 2K primer means it requires a catalyst so in that respect it is like an epoxy already. Most 2K primers can be mixed as high build 4:1 or sealer 4:1:1.

The primer I like to use can be mixed as a high build filler 4:1 or as a surfacer 4:1:1 or a wet on wet sealer 4:1:2.

I didn't use SlickSand ony car....I used Evercoat Superbuild 4:1 since it seemed less complicated to mix. Was told the two products are pretty much the same otherwise.

I sprayed a coat of Superbuild and block sanded. Then another light coat of Superbuild again. Block sanded to 240 then the 2k as a surfacer. Last step will be as a sealer before the base color coat.

I am not sure if this is the best way....seems like it will work. ?

You are right...2K means it needs a catalyst. So many use the term only to mean surfacing primer I was just trying to clarify.
Never knew about using surfacing primer for different purposes, such as sealer. I thought, maybe incorrectly, that that was more of a porosity issue. I am definitely a novice though!

It seems like the products change and evolve quicker than I can keep up with. Everytime I do a car (which isn't often) there is different stuff to try or a different way to use it. I try and trust the advice and recommendations I get from the guys and gals at the paint store.....they really seem to know their products well.

The way it was explained to me is that some of the better 2K products can be used for multiple uses which I suppose would be good for the collision industry.

Still learning myself.....something new every day.

Yep, last time I went to buy some DX330 ... no more, same product, different name, and no more quarts, had to buy a $50 gallon.

Do you have to sand the 2K primer now?

Yes....and after thinking about it, I’ll probably do another session of 2k with the final sanding at 600 grit

You missed a spot

When my wife asked me about painting my car I mentioned building a temporary paint booth ... she seemed skeptical, I assured her it was possible.

Sneak peak of the 2k primer sanded to 320 grit. Taking it to 600.
