general feedback on 68
I just bought it about a month ago after running phs report. According to a couple of friends, it’s an odd combo.
I’ll post the phs sheet with this post but here’s what I’ve learned about it so far. It is a Texas build, sold in Madera, Ca in March 68. It was out of DMV system and stored since 72 until original owner passed away. I bought it from a guy in Madera a year after he purchased from widow. It is a matching numbers 400 HO with code ws and 66k original miles. 4 spd is m20 and rear is code wh. It nowhere near perfect but does have zero rust runs and shifts excellent. I did send the original carb to cliffs high performance though after I decided to change the internal filter and threads were gone. My question is how rare is starlight black on red interior with a white vinyl top? It also came with white walls and a huge stereo 8 track. |

Can't be very common with the white top ... don't think I've ever seen the combo in a photo.
Check out the "Ultimate GTO" site and see if you can track down another. |

That’s for the lead but struck out there. I saw plenty of black on black 68s though. Maybe a member here has one.
I guess it doesn’t really matter as I’m not not putting a white top back on. It’s just be black on red like factory but doing a black vinyl top as I like it better.. |

Should be a standout. I've never seen a black on red with a white top. Black on red is an awesome combo. If it were mine, I might even leave the vinyl top off altogether.
Pic below is one of my favorites for inspiration, even though it's a '69..Black over red.

I love the black on red too. I considered going no vinyl but figured the black vinyl top does break it up with some detail plus that would make it easier down the road if I ever wanted to try the factory white one. I bought the Ames Legendary one.

Looks like a great find and has to be a very rare and striking color combo. Never seen one like it. Mine was built in Arlington a month after yours.

I’m excited about it. I should have the carb back next week sometime then the car will get the top redone.
I’m on a budget so it won’t be show level paint but decent single stage starlight black paint. I plan to have fun with this car. I’ll get the 18 lb 8 track back in there and see if my Johnny Cash tape will play. |

I'm Arlington July.
Would look super sharp black with black top, and super bragging rights rare black with white top. |

I considered going exact factory but I think white top may have needed those white walls to go with it...odd special order. Who knows.. Maybe it would look good. Going black vinyl top makes it easy to go white later I guess.
I’ve done all the regular searches, called phs to ask them and couldn’t find another so it was tempting to go white since oddball. Maybe a member here has one. I struck out skimming ultimate gto. |

There was a convertible Lemans version that was at Barrett Jackson several years ago.
I liked the combination. You have a great car!

Neat car, nice HO 4speed powertrain, rust free what not to like!!
My first choice would be to remove the top all together, second choice would be to leave it white (I think it was actually almost parchment) just to keep it "as built" But either of those or with a black top will be sweet.

That is a really nice looking color combo and the wire discs are just the perfect icing on the cake!

Thank you. That does give it a different look for sure. Wheels on it now are 15 inch flower mags from no idea when but probably late 60s/early 70s. They are too wide in the front so that’s another challenge...15x9 or even 10 but somehow don’t rub. 15x10 rear with 295/50/15 tires rear so probably been on a long time. These actually look like flower petals and I can’t find a narrower wheel for front. The ones I’ve seen the petals are wide at base, not tapered.

I actually like the look of that white top on the combo. Now that I've seen it, I believe I may have seen the combo before on a '64 convert.

White top on black does have a very classy look to it. Kind of like a GTO wearing a tuxedo.

Very cool, thanks for sharing. Tuxedo on the outside, party on the inside! I’d do it correct since it is a numbers car. You car, your choice. Good luck
