Default Ok I know I seem nuts now...

When I bought the car it had an air cleaner assembly on it but I was told it wasn’t correct so assumed it wasn’t.
After looking at that unit for a dual stage filter I started thinking the one I have could be right.

So maybe someone can verify but I believe I already have my original assembly based upon that pic in last post.

Default Can someone verify if my hunch is correct

I posted earlier a pic showing a dual stage filter I got from a Yenko site showing 68 gto with one of the dual stage stock assembly’s. Compare that to mine I’m posting to crack the mystery.

Default I don’t have the best eyes

Nuts looks the same to me. That’d be great news for me so I can save a few bucks.

This looks like the right one to me. Trumpets look a little narrow or too short on the other ones. I'm not positive but I think the heavy duty air cleaner is just the addition of the foam to the regular paper filter. I don't think there's any difference in the cleaner assembly itself.
The one you posted pics of does not look like a '68 GTO assembly. There is no paper sticker on the '68, directions are silk-screened, and I don't recall that elbow on the bottom side of the trumpet.

Default Air cleaner

Supposedly that picture on yenko.net was an original 68 gto though. Assembly looked identical to what I have.
Is there a source to verify?
The seller I bought my 68 from said that air cleaner was in the trunk with an assortment of other original parts for it.
Of course I’m at a standstill until I verify one way or the other.

I can't say for sure on the heavy duty a/c. I'm pretty certain that the Firebird cleaner posted above is the right one for a standard, base GTO. '69 had a dual snorkel and I don't recall any open-element filters for '68.

It’s not open element, just two separate shots of it.

Default Cal car?

Is it possible that since the car was shipped to Cal and sold here, it could have had the narrower snorkel?

Not on my California car. Don't have a picture since the car is 700 miles away but the one that Greg posted looks to be the same.

The narrow snorkel air cleaner in the photos is a 68-69 4 bbl used on non "performance" applications... 68 400 4bbl on fullsize car only, 69 400 and 428-360 fullsize car only, 69 GP 400 only

The correct air cleaner for a 68-69 firebird 400 is the wide single snorkel with a chrome lid. It was also used on all 428's in 68, 68 GTO, 69 GP with 428 (370 or HO) and 69 428 HO on fullsize. The same air cleaner was also used with a painted lid on the 69 (not sure about 68) Tempest series and Firebird with the 350 HO.

There were no differences for California sale or the presence of the HD air cleaner option (other than a different stencil identifying the replacement filter element).

Btw, all the HD air cleaner option was is a oil soaked foam wrap around the same paper element. When replacing the air filter you installed a new paper standard element and then cleaned the foam with solvent, re-oiled it and then reinstalled it.

Default Great info on that air cleaner

I was directed to the date code and it ws late 68 I was told too.
I ended up buying a restored one like the one Bruce posted it from musclecaraircleaners.com complete. It should come in about the same time my carb returns from Cliffs Performance. I’m just excited to get it fired up and drive it.

I'll be in the market for a good 68 setup in a year or so, can't believe the prices they are going for now. We'll probably see a decent repop before long if the prices stay this high.

Well on ebay they are about $400 for a "restored" 68 base and top. About $200 for a very good used base section only. Lots of crap bases for $100-150. I've also seen a bunch of bent up, rusty examples for about $250.

Not sure how well they are selling as I get notices from ebay everyday on the stuff I am watching ... and some of them have been for sale for months.

Cleaners like the dual snorkel 70's GTO are going for like $600-700 restored.

Also ... buyer beware, the majority of the air cleaners listed as "GTO" are not for a GTO, they are generic Pontiac 4 bbl bases with the longer, narrower snorkel. You'll find "restored" bases with rust holes that have been filled with epoxy or body filler and painted.
