Also, I know you're going for a certain look with the serpentine belt, but doesn't a serpentine belt require more tension than a typical V-belt, or multiple V-belts? I'm just seeing a lot of tension here being placed on that crank snout, especially with the pulleys mounted so far away from the face of the engine block/timing cover.

Brian, I know exactly what you are getting at, but, the only choice I would really have is to reverse the positions of the blower cog and the serp. drive pulley...I don't know if I can do that...I am only gonna run 6, maybe 8 lbs of boost. I do realize that a fulcrum is a fulcrum but...... HEY, ANYONE with an opinion chime in here.....THANKS, Eric

Well, I guess all that's to do at this point is run it and see. Maybe someone with an engineering background (hello, Tom Vaught!) can comment on balancer bolt torque (whether the factory desired 160 ft/lbs. will be enough) and balancer bolt material. I recall Bill Bolin driving over his balancer on the street from a fastener failure, albeit I think he had the two blowers on it at that time and not just the one 8-71.

I recently talked to Richie Hoffman about the crank snout issue. We were sure we were in the "safe zone' with the balancer, and pulleys. We also called and consulted a "famous Pontiac builder", and in his opinion, the set up should be fine. We are not going to be anywhere near over stressing the crank. I am gonna limit myself to one blower.... and stay below 10lbs (6-8) of boost, and 1200HP....in my 'grocery getter'.....Thanks everyone for your input, and knowledge. It is MUCH appriciated!! This is my first adventure in an "artificially respirated motor".... Eric

Is your balancer a press fit or slip fit? I'm guessing it's press fit since it a custom piece, also looks like it uses a steel hub and two keyways. I'm thinking that a press fit balancer, with the proper torque on a good balancer bolt and having a steel hub with two keyways should work just fine! I have yet to see a picture of a broken crank snout on this or any other Pontiac forum. I also would like to hear from Tom Vaught on this crank snout issue.

The Pontiac crank snout is reasonably short and that sorta helps. I'd hate to try a 460 Ford which has the same OD snout as the Pontiac but near twice as long. The further out any possible imbalance or harmonic is the greater its effect. IMO precise balance, belt loading across the pulley equal, and harmonic control are most important. As far as strength in the rotational direction I think you will be fine Eric.

Blown, and Bruce, Thank you for your knowledgable opinions. Everything on the engine (internally) is balanced, the hub/balancer is a "very tight fit"....I am over my "snout snap paranoia". All the pistons are in the motor now. We are gonna have a build session at Richie Hoffmans shop tomorrow. I will post some progress pics. Again THANK YOU for chiming in on this thread. I wouldn't mind hearing from Tom Vaught also!! ERIC

Went to Richie Hoffman's yesterday...took some pics of my motor going together....it's starting to look like something besides a "room full of cool parts"!!!! Eric

Looking good Eric! What type of piston coating(s) did you have applied?

The coating is a thermal barrier applied by Diamond when we ordered the pistons.....Honestly i don't know what it is made of..."secret ingredients" I guess

Looking good Eric. Nice to see a roots blower here as there's so many turbos being built. I hope to get started putting my own blown motor together soon. All the pieces are here. I'm only going to run a 671 on a 433 but it should be fun! Keep the pics coming as you make progress!

Rob...

Thanks Rob...It's getting there....so far we've had to "customize" almost every piece to fit the block....I can't wait to dyno it and put it in the car!!! I will keep posting as we go. Eric

Default custom fit

Boy i know what your going thru. Been working on getting a gear drive for the Allpontiac for a year now. Got a direction I want to go. It all finally coming together. Ive made so many modified or custom parts on my car over the years. Guess thats what it takes When your not running Chevy or Ford.
