Aw, man.
I was just watching a few Waddell Wilson interviews last week. Talked about how Cale was sand bagging in practice before he broke 200+ mph at Daytona.
Then he flipped over and wrecked the Monte Carlo on the second qualifying lap, which led to him being the last driver ever to win the Daytona 500 in a Pontiac (bodied car).

Cale was my favorite driver.
When I was about 10 or 11 we vacationed in different areas of Florida during July.
1974 or 1975 ,,, I don't remember for sure.
Didn't care anything about NASCAR really at that age , but we stayed at the Hawaiian Inn in Daytona Beach and Cale and his family were staying there too.

He had a daughter my age and I shadowed her for 2 days around the pool and the beach.
She was pretty
On the third day - I laid a big kiss on her - and she didn't fight back or scream.
It was Love !
We left the next morning for Orlando
That was race day .

So that's how I picked Cale

Cale was a tough competitor on the track but a true southern gentleman off the track. I think I still have an old Cale/Hardees 1/64 die cast car from a Hardees kids meal.
RIP to one of the good guys

David Hobbs told a funny story about him on Dale Jr's podcast some time ago: at one race, the TV audio guys were trying to figure out an odd noise coming from the in-car camera setup in Cale's car. It turned out Cale was making vroom-vroom race car noises as he drove.
