Sound when lifting off of clutch on ‘67 GTO
Folks - rebuilt Muncie 4 speed installed with new u joints and new driveshaft, pressure plate, and clutch disc. When put in gear, any gear, and, while lifting clutch, there’s a sound, not quite like grinding, but more of a sound of rubbing. To me it sounds like something being sanded. Mechanic at different shop...where car is now, thinks perhaps clutch disc installed backwards. Could there be other possibilities?
Thanks, Rob in Nor-Cal |

ahhhhh the sweet sound of a fresh turned flywheel and a new hd disc.....
maybe ......... if your disc was in backwards I think you would be grinding going into gear because the disc springs hang out farther on the tranny side than the flywheel side ,.... and they would hang up on the flywheel bolt heads,,,, causing the disc to spin,,,,, keeping the tranny spinning and making it super hard to get into gear with the engine running ... just my .02 Scott |

Mate a similar problem. He used ARP F/W-to-crank bolts & the heads were too thick, caused rubbing.

A lot of spinning parts equals a lot of guesses. Time to do hands on inspection and investigation. Start by looking for material dust. Could be of the metal kind or the clutch kind. If none present then move onto bearings.

Video clip with sound would be useful. I agree that most discs put in backwards would simply lock up on the bolts. Can't rule out the ARP bolt problem but would think that would be a pretty metallic sound. More of a chic, chic, chic type sound rather than a sanding sound.

Take a look above the front knuckle of the driveshaft and see if it's rubbing on the transmission tunnel. It will sound like something is tearing itself apart.. a loud grinding noise coming up thru the floor between the seats. If so it's probably the rear transmission mount. Don't ask me how I know that one. LOL

I have run into this more than once and it was my first thought, as well. The factory bolts have very shallow heads for just this reason. If the clutch disc were in backwards, you wouldn't be able to get it in gear or drive it at all.
