He's had it since 2013.

I don't think it's going anywhere soon - he's 45 years old - has a good job and doesn't need the money.

He reimbursed me for the parts I purchased, paid for the wide whitewalls and paid to ship it down to Phoenix from MN (my neighbor owns a very large trucking company - it went down on a flat bed with a big front end loader headed to Phoenix - so the price was very reasonable).

I have a 1970 Lemans Sport with a 6cyl and 4sp. Had 3 on the tree, but the rubber grommets were worn out and I couldn’t find replacements so we put a 4sp in it. Much better to drive.

My 66 Tempest is an original 326, with a 3 on the tree. It was a very base model with a 326 and radio being the only options. It still has the factory rubber floor mat with Pontiac arrowhead logos, instead of carpet, no arm rests in the back seat, and a what looks like a 64 steering wheel, but is original to the car, I don't think I have seen another one like it in a 66. I have added a Muncie 4 speed with a correct bench seat shifter, front power disc brakes, and power steering with a variable ratio steering box out of a Grand Cherokee. I did keep all the correct parts, including the column shifter, and 3 speed tranny.

Several years ago we had a 64 Grand Prix running around here with factory 3 on the tree. Never seen another.

Last I knew, the 66 GTO three on the three I saw was in Sturgis, MI. I have no idea where it went from there. May still be around.

I remember a few ford and chevy vehicles that I had way back that were 3 on the tree. No matter what we drove we drove it like you stole it. Most of them didnt like to be speed shifted,,,lol. Trying to slam it from 1st to 2nd usually meant the linkage would get jammed and Id be on the side of the road crawling underneath to free them up.

I learned how to drive on a 3 on the tree. My Dad had a 59 Chevy Biscayne wagon, then replaced it with a 67 Biscayne wagon, 3 on the tree. In 1973 I raced figure 8 at Riverside in Agawam Mass. with a 67 Chevy Biscayne 6 popper with a 3 on the tree. I have a 70 Tempest that came with a 6 with three on the tree. It's funny how this was a "cheaper" or no cost thing because it involved the whole column and really long linkages.

Years ago, had a 71 Nova with a 307/3 speed column shift. A friends teenage son wanted to buy it for the drivetrain, wanted to take it for a ride. Handed him the key's, and told him it was a 3 speed. He said "no problem", until he got behind the wheel, and was clueless. His dad had to take him for a ride in it.

A long time back, when 60s cars were still on the used car lots, I came across a '66 or '67 Malibu SS with a bench seat and 3 on the tree. The salesman told me that the original buyer wanted a bench seat and that was the only way he could get it. Looking back I wonder if it was a Malibu that someone had added the SS equipment to. I do remember it having the big block under the hood though.
The first three vehicles I had were column shift 3 speeds. The drivers Ed cars were all standard shift as well.
I learned to drive on a tractor so for me it was no big deal but for a lot of kids it was quite an issue. I remember sitting in the back seat giggling while some young girl was trying to get the car to move.

I'd like to find a 1971 Catalina with a three speed some day. It was the last year a manual transmission was available in the full size Pontiacs; it was only available for the first half of the model year, and they only built a handful of them (I forget the exact numbers, but I think it was only something like 15 or 20.)

I think what some maybe even here have missed or forgotten was that three on the three was the norm back then, then as time went on and automatics became more popular, people wanting stick would more often than not pay for a floor shift...

Had a buddy that would take his dad's 56 chevy straight six and 3 on the column out, and pound on it all the time. Went for 2nd one day, and the shifter snapped off, and it and his fist hit the windshield, cracking it !! Needless to say, he wasn't driving it for awhile after that !

In a 66 or 67 Malibu with a bench seat I do believe you could have had 3 or 4 speed on the floor or 3 speed or automatic on the column. I think the salesman was BS ing you. Either that or he didn’t know what he was talking about.

Before that, it was a floor shift that was standard. It was a big deal, I think the late 30's, when you could get a column shift car, and get away from the floor shift.

Thought i knew just about everything on a 66 GTO [favorite year].
That one got me

Sure enough, 64 - 65 - 67 , all say 3spd Syncromesh Floor Shift , as standard equipment with GTO [model or model option] on original window stickers.
66 does not.

Wondering how much it was to upgrade from column shift 3spd to floor shift 3spd on a 66 GTO ?
