70-72 GTO Radio Delete Plate???
I am reaching out to all the 70-72 Pontiac GTO Judge experts. I recently purchased a box lot of miscellaneous GTO parts. Included in the lot is what I believe is a rare 70-72 GTO Radio Delete Plate.
I have never seen one or even knew they existed. I did some research and looked through several old dealer parts books and found a listing for a "Plate, Radio Opening Cover" Gr. 10.256 Part # 9799667. The 1970 parts books lists it for Tempest and the 1981 book says 70-72 A-Body. Neither book had a detailed photo. And its a known fact that GTO dash bezel had the aluminum swirl polished surface whereas Lemans and Tempest had ribbed plastic. Ames Performance lists a reproduction radio delete plate made of plastic with ribs but no listing for a plate that would match the GTO aluminum swirl polished surface. An internet search comes up blank. The plate I have is made of metal with an aluminum plate wrapped around and crimped. It does not have any part number which is strange. It measures 9" X 2-1/4".The studs line up exactly with the radio knobs and the back has 4 bent tabs that would center it in the dial opening. Looks too nice to be home made. The swirl polish is somewhat different than the GTO dash bezel however. See photos, Could it be an old aftermarket part? Has anyone ever seen something like this plate? Could it be a rare factory piece? Can anyone offer any information? Value? Thank You, Rockys1970 |

I don't think they came with swirl pattern? Probably an aftermarket piece or homemade?
I know they aren't really radio delete plate. Commonly known as. Reality it's when a blank out plate when radio isn't ordered.

Agree with Mike, as have examied several original blockoff plates in '70 & 71 GTO's. the '70-72 Pontiac A-body block off plate was of a molded plastic design with thin horizontal ribs to match the design of the lwr area on a stock '71-72 LeMans dash bezel. Someone went to some effort to make the above swirled face block off plate. One thing to note is when Pontiac did source a swirled appliqué on the '70-72 dash bezels, the appliqué was thin & glued on, the folded edge design of the appliqué on the above pictured block off plate looks quite bulky (for better choice of words).

Am know expert but that isn't home made. Look at the metal base and the cut outs in the corners, way to perfect. Also on Judge273's picture it's showing no swirls. So if you order a 70 GTO with radio delete, you got no swirl applique?

With a pair of pattern snips , a box brake and light body hammer that would be easy to do for a competent tinner.

Just throwing this out there but is it possible to be an early 70's TA heater control block off plate. Not sure that was even available.

That spartan look (radio delete/no console) looks so clean! I may have to give that a go in my ‘70. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

The 70-72 block off plate has been correctly reproduced in a limited run. I may have an extra.

Radio Delete Plate
All,
After doing much research it appears that the radio delete plate that I have is not for a Pontiac. I believe it to be a 1963 or 1964 Chevy Impala unit. Thanks to everyone who responded and posted photos. Rockys1970 |
