Upgraded rear brake pads?
I posted this over at YB, but curious if anyone has experience using the high dollar brake pads. I always used them for circle track, which of course is a little different than how my 68 is used. Here is thr current situation...
Ford 9" with Explorer rear disc brakes in my 68 firebird. Manual MC with 4wheel disc distribution block. My braking generally seems ok with plenty of time to slow down after a drag run, but I feel like I could use more rear brake. I see that the generic semi metallic pads are only 1" wide, while the surface area of the rotor is 1.75" wide. Couple questions... -- does anyone know if a wider pad is available for the Explorer calipers? -- would a Hawk Ferro-Carbon pad (or other) provide more cold friction stopping power than a generic SM pad? Interested to know this too because the brake pads that came with the Yukon kit I got for the 9 inch with explorer brakes seem chintzy. Tom Vaught has this setup maybe ask him

I've used the Hawk HPS pads on several different vehicles, and love them. On a Tacoma and an FJ Cruiser, the pedal "feel" improved dramatically over the OEM pads. Dusting is minimal.
I tried the "improved" HPS 5.0 pads once, I believe they are supposed to designed for ABS systems. Did not feel any better than the regular HPS, and caused a reddish-brown dusting.

I did put a set of Hawk ferro carbon "street" pads on the rear last week, but really cannot tell any difference... the front already had the Hawk ceramic pads, which came with the aerospace disc brake kit.
