Rectifier diodes in late model car
Alternator crapped out this weekend on my wife Toyota. Has that common Denso Alternator. Pulled it apart & one of the Diodes in the Rectifier blew. I found replacement rectifiers but most have 12 diodes (4 per field) rather than the 6 this one has.
Any reason I cannot or shouldn't run the 12 diode rectifier? Seems I should be able to but am not sure why this one only has 6. Lower amp rating I would imagine? I can post picts, but this is what I am looking at for a replacement. https://www.maniacelectricmotors.com/77904070.html

The 12 diode rectifier passes a "full wave "output. The six diode job is just a minimal out put single wave.
https://www.google.com/search?q=full...hrome&ie=UTF-8 The 12 diode model will put out a more consistent "effective voltage " and will handle more current/voltage before overheating. Better output, longer life, yeah ,I would run it. |

For the cost of the diodes, I am surprised it doesn't have 12. it has power everything, heated seats, etc. Looks like they use silver solder to connect the windings. I'll have to pick up a stick of that. Used to have some from some refrigeration work I did years ago, but thats long gone. I was just going to buy a new alternator, but they are over $200 rebuilt & who knows how worn out the core was. This one I know is clean with low miles so I am just going to repair it. I suppose I should replace the regulator while I am in there.... That thing is puny.
Thanks for the input!
