Default Ignition lock issues

69 grand prix Tilt steering column.

I get in and the key will only turn backwards and about 1/8" forwards.
Removed the ignition lock and it works fine.
Put the new one in and the new lock cylinder does the same thing.

What other part would have gone wrong that will not let me rotate my key to the run and start position?

This is a driver car. Drove it home, parked it in the driveway. Came back out a few days later and the key wouldn't work.

Can someone tell me what's going on? Something other than the ignition cylinder is broken or changed.

With the ignition cylinder lock out I can turn the lever inside the column back to the acc position and turn forward just a little. The same as when the cylinder lock is installed.

I can get the whole ignition cylinder out of the sleeve. Tumbler stays in the cylinder.
when removed the cylinder will move freely with the key.
When installed, it won't move as described.

The bar that is inside the column appears to have a problem moving. Although it moves back into the acc freely.

The gold "tab" on the left is part of that bar. it connects to the back of the ignition cylinder. You can see in the pictures the slot that releases the cylinder.

I know I'm mostly talking to myself.
Funny, I posted over on ebodies.org as I'm a barracuda guy and I've gotten over a dozen replies in half the time this has been posted.
Somebody has to be on this site that knows what is going on.

I have no idea if this applies to your ride, but if it is an auto, try grabbing the steering wheel and try to turn it while turning the key. Newer cars are bad about locking up if shut off with the wheels turned or against a curb. May not apply to you, but.......

It’s fairly common for the rack on the upper end of the rod that actuates the ignition switch to break.Sometimes the plastic gear fails but it is usually the rack that fails.

Any idea where I can see a picture of the "rack" complete without everything in front of it.?

I'm not sure about the rack or the plastic gear.

Thanks for the help.

Oh, wheels not against curb. Straight. Didn't help to tweek the wheel before. Thanks though.

ok, I found the rack. at least in drawing form so far.
I don't see the plastic gear you spoke of.

I will do some searching to find some info on removing this and getting a new one. gear or rack whichever it may be.

Anyone got pictures of these parts?

Ok. Can someone tell me if these parts interchange with other makes and models?

I made a mistake. I was looking at the "regular" steering column. Here is the pictures for the tilt column.

I guess I just have to dig in and find the broken parts. Then hopefully I can find the parts before I need to have the car moved from my driveway.

You can see the gear in the picture 9-19 and the picture on the far right also.I think that those parts may be 69-70 only but I’m not positive. There are a lot of internal differences between early tilts and 71 up tilts.

can't remove the switch due to previous "neat" hackers.

wires wont slide up the wire protector.

Looks like I'm gonna have to drop the column and remove the wire protector housing.

However there is a pivot pin I can't find at the moment. ........

There is two pivot pins, one at 3 o’clock and one at 9o’clock. They are covered by the upper pot metal housing that houses the lock cylinder. The lock cylinder, tilt lever, flasher knob and 3 large Phillips screws must be removed before you can pull the housing off.

All removed. It appears that as I remove the bearing housing/upper pot metal housing that the housing is hitting the golden lever that connects to the actual lock cylinder. I can see it moving forward as it is being hit or pushed by something behind. Figures.
Would that possibly mean a broken rack lever?

I’m not sure what the golden part is because I can’t see it in person. The only thing that I can think of that has a gold color is the upper end of the rod that hooks into the ignition switch that is on the lower outside of the column. That golden or brass end slips into the lower end of the pot metal rack. When the rack fails it is usually at the lower end where the two pieces hook together.you may have to pull the pivot pins and large nylock nut and remove the lower bearing housing to inspect the rack. When pulling the lower housing reinstall the tilt lever so you can move the adjuster pawls to ease releasing the lower housing.

Think I'd take the ignition switch off and see if it freed things up. I've replaced a few that came apart inside (worn out) and bound up the key/rack/lock mechanism.
Loosening the two mounting/adjusting screws may be enough to tell.

ignition switch is off. Didn't change the locking mechanism in the column. Unfortunately. That would have been too easy.
