Default Need new rack and pinion for a subaru

The cost of a brand new one can easily get up to approx. $600.
The re-manufactured units are closer to $200.
I understand that some of the re-manufacturers use lousy seals and bad cores sometimes.

Anybody have experience with a particularly good re-manufactured rack and pinion source ?

Thanks !

I work for O'Reilly Auto Parts so I may be a bit biased, but we sell a lot of R&Ps and I can't remember one coming back defective in the 1 1/2 years I have been there. We sell the A-1 Cardone brand.

I have never needed one myself, but I saved this link because it was highly recommended on another car forum I used to frequent.

They ship you a remanufactured unit with a return shipping label and when you ship your old one back to them in that same box they refund your core charge. At the time, I looked up the cost to get one locally and even with the core charge and shipping it was cheaper than what I could find anywhere else without the core charge.

For a fraction of the cost go to car-part.com and find a used one. Just another inexpensive option.

It`s a crap shoot with the aftermarket nowadays.Napa has some VERY questionable parts. Some ok,some we change out 3-4 times.

Check the dealers;they do vary.

I only use OEM parts on my wifes Tacoma, and my F-350.

FWIW,most of the small items,(plugs, filters, etc),for the Tacoma, are cheaper at the dealer than they are at Napa.

different make, but -

I know some of the GM Rack and Pinions (mainly 80s & 90s) used an aluminum case/housing that wore out quick (as early as 80K miles) and the remanufactured ones had a sleeve put in the old ones during the rebuild process that was superior to the OEM rack. One guy I knew replaced alot of 'em swore on them over the OEM ones.

I've noticed that lately; NAPA used to cost more but the quality was known to be better. I have noticed their prices are about the same now, so I wondered about that -

I talked to the commercial salesman at work today and he told me that very few problems are found with our units. He said the two most prevalent problems with any rebuilt unit are seals put in cocked or fittings cross threaded. And these problems will show up immediately.
