I have this picture of a 7040263 Quadrajet (70 Formula 4 speed with 12 heads) and just noticed it is made by Carter. It's the only pic I have for now, will see it in person after the holidays.

numbers wise, it looks like the correct carb for that motor but what struck me was Carter which can be seen over Quadrajet. I always knew Carter made some Qjets, but never saw a 7040263 by Carter.

Anyone ever saw a 7040263 (or 264) made by Carter ?

Looks like stock to me. The stamp is going the correct direction . I thought carter stamped them different. Im.no expert thou

original it is for sure, been sitting since the late 80s.

Typical restamped Frankencarb. Carter made Quadrajets uses a letter for month and a digit for the year in date code, not four digits like a genuine Rochester made Quadrajet has.

really surprised because it's been sitting on an original 70 formula 400 with it's original 12 heads, intake, 902 alternator and 111176 distributor since the late 80s. Motor has been rebuilt using 76 400 short block, but everything else is apparently original, right down to the WB 70 4 speed Muncie. But then again, I ain't no expert.

I am not aware of that application number being made by carter;
I have never personally seen one.
I had understood that the "Carter" castings were typically the automatic bread & butter carbs - so 7040264 & 7040262; with the former being the most common.

I opened up your link twice to be sure nothing went sideways.
That IS numbered like a carter carb;
The (tiny) picture uploaded by the op is absolutely suspect for being a carter casting numbered like a non-Carter casting.

Just an FYI. Carter built Q-jets were put on Pontiac 428's AND Ford 428's in the same year! Rochester built carbs were used on MOPAR's as well. Have seen GM rebuild of these with Carter Bowl assembly as the pump assy would wear out.

I have seen one on a 68 428. That said, I'm no Ford guy, but my point was that Carter was building lots of Rochester for various applications, not all were " run of the mill" . Thanks for the correction.

Carter made factory applications for Chevrolet and Pontiac only, no high performance units though.

Ford used Rochester Quadrajets on 1970-71 429 SCJ's.

Rochester Quadrajet replaced the Carter TQ on mid 80's Mopar.

And, Delco/Rochester/GM never used Carter castings for replacement or rebuilt units.

Just a slight correction as I used to own one of these cars;
The q-jet came on 70-71 429 CJ. When one ordered this engine plus the “drag pack” option the engine became a 429 SCJ and they were equipped with a 780 Holley.

I finally was able to get my hands on this 1970 Formula parts lot I was looking at back in December, and the carb is finally a Rochester. The only pic I had to deal with which had been sent to me by the owner at the time led me to believe it was made by Carter. Here it is.
