67 GTO Original Radiator Cap
I was at a swap meet this past week and among other things was looking for an original NOS radiator cap (AC RC-!5) for my survivor car. I had, from a box of parts that came with the car what I believed to be the original cap for the car. One of the vendors, indicated the flat brass rivet in the center of the cap would have been incorrect for a January built 67 as that style was typically not found until later in the year, and more commonly on the 68's. He said the correct applicaton would have had a brass rivet with an indentation. (He also indicated the round head, hollow rivet and non-brass rivets were also incorrect for the application.) Before I spend $175 to $300 on a cap, is there anyone who has any insight into the correct cap?

My original cap on left, first one I bought on right.
I say first one, because I sent that one back and got the seller to send me one with the RC15 circle straight. I bought my car in Sept of 1967, not sure of the build date, because I've never felt the need to get the PHS documents. Maybe I should though. Charles |

Charles,
Thanks for the response -- but it adds to my confusion as Zazarine's Pontiac Restoration Guide 1964 to 1972 calls for part #861050 which was a standard AC-Delco part number used since 1957. Some drawings I came across call for the original caps to be manufactured of zinc-plated steel 2.36 inches in diameter and 3.15 across including the ears, with each ear being approximately 0.4 inch in size. Some of my other restoration guides indicate stainless steel was a later service replacement item. |

All I know for sure about that is what I told you above.
I know what my car had new. I am the only person to have worked on it ever, except for some body work and alignment. Charles |

The large ear RC-15 was the original cap in '67,they came out with the small ear cap and suggested people do the change over. The thinking was,the large ear cap was easier to take off.I still have my original large ear cap,but currently hace a small ear RC-15 on the car.
ETA:My car was a Nov '66 built car,I'm guessing there was a change over for the small ear cap, just not sure about the date. |

It's fun to have, even if you already know all about the car and have all the original literature. It's also helpful (to other hobbyists) to work backwards, comparing the way the PHS documents record the details with the literature you already have (like the window sticker or any build sheets, for example). If your car was a '65, I'd split the cost with ya... K

Keith,
Thanks, I know you are correct, I just never felt the need before. But I keep thinking I should get it while it's available. Well, we could pretend it's a 65? Charles |

Well Gary,
If that would get Keith to pay 50% of PHS, I'd do it for the time being! After all, it's all in the family! |

Charles agree with Keith.Plus when you see that big manila envelope in your mail box it will be like Christmas in August. Might help in this summer heat. Steve
