Hey Everybody,
Who uses accumulators and likes them?
Thanks and Take Care, Craig

We had a Moroso accumulator and solenoid valve on the Grocery Getter. In all the years of thrashing that car, we never hurt any bearings. I would click the solenoid valve off before killing the engine at the end of a run to store pressure in it. Then I could prelube the engine before starting. I totally recommend them!

I have used the Accusump Oil Accumulators or projects both at home and at work.
The accumulators do work. The accumulators are all basically the same design.

Any recommendations or Kits:
1. for a stock block/stock filter housing in full frame car?
2. for aftermarket iron block - plumbing into block?
Thanks, Craig

I used an accumulator to solve a low oil pressure problem in the shutdown area. My biggest problem now is remembering to shut it off while there's oil pressure at the end of the day at the track. I don't have an electric solenoid and have to have my wife do it by hand while I rev up the engine. (no smart comments, please ).

Would plumbing the feed line into block through the top of lifter galley in the plug by the distributor work well?
Thanks, Craig

The lines to the accumulator are 1/2”. That plug by the dizzy is probably a 1/4”. If you were going to do that you would want to open up to 1/2”. Would at least want 3/8s.

We used a 3 quart Moroso with a solenoid valve in a couple Pontiacs. They just teed in to the remote filter. Circle track cars, 8 qt at pan plus 3 in the accumulator.

I have opened up the hole by the dizzy and plumbed straight into there.
Makes for pretty easy plumbing, with short line.
Will try and post some pics later.
I used a manual morse cable for remote driver control. That way you can vary opening rate when refilling.
Before shutting down engine raise rpm for a few seconds, (or shut at end of run with rpm still high.)
Prior to restart, open valve fully to pre lube. Shut valve. Start engine, then SLOWLY open valve to refill ready for on demand oiling backup. If you open the valve too quickly at idle, you will see the pressure drop as it refills quickly. I prefer to open slowly and not see this, although the risk is pretty minor at idle. Don't forget to add additional oil capacity to suit and DO NOT use Cantons one way valve ANYWHERE in the system.

The Canton "One Way Valve" is not necessary and can cause other issues (as mentioned by 455-4+1). Most of the Installations we have used were manual valve installations on the dyno cells, for a reason. Most of the installations used Accusump parts.

I put one on my car after last years race season and was also told to not use the anti drain back valve. I used a remote oil filter set-up with a filter that has a anti drain back valve in the filter and plumbed the Accusump between filter and the block.

Due to current issues and no racing for me, I will not be able to provide feedback until next year. :-(

My gauge still reads 60 pounds in the sump from the last time I shut down, so the good thing is no more dry starts after a long sit.

I use one with good success. Pics of install on 72 GTO below. Moroso accumulator and eclectic valve -10 line to the hole next to the distributor in the block. That’s a 3/8” npt if I recall.

Hey Everybody,
Very helpful - all responses.
Q: GTO Dan - Did you use the stock size hole by the distributor or enlarge it?
Just wondered about opinions of restriction and flow. = Maybe wait until I get new block to open up the hole??? - Though might be longer than I think
Thanks guys,
Craig

I have an IAII block and used the stock hole. It is the same size as my old ‘72 455 block. It seems to work fine to maintain a desirable oil pressure.

H-O made oil accumulators as an option for our turbocharger kits in the 70s and 80s. They performed successfully when plumed into the oil port adjacent to the distributor . A shut off valve is not necessary if you preload the accumulator with 20-30 PSI air. This means the oil pressure must overcome the air pressure in the accumulator before any oil is removed from the pan. You will still get a minimum of 20-30 oil PSI on fireup. The shut off valve is nice if you like to pre-lube your engine before starting. In practice, the engine oil pressure seemed to rise at the same rate, with or without the accumulator installed.

We could see a drop in pressure with rapid valve opening rates, even with a high volume Peterson external oil pump and _12 lines driven at 55%.
We did however measure pressure out through the front of the block at the #1 main, rather than at the rear.
Measuring pressure at the typical rear location may not have seen this drop.
For sustained WOT running of up to 60 seconds we wanted to see the worst case scenario our bearings were having to endure. Our clearances may have also en larger for cooling purposes and oil to valvetrain was unrestricted for the same reasons (solid roller).
