Hard starting
I have a 66 GTO with a fairly stock motor, 750 edelbrock and an edelbrock intake with about a 1” rise. Hei distributor . I pump the pedal 3 times and the engine fires up. I run the car down the highway between 60 and 105 with pedal to spare. I get to my destination and shut it down, the car sits for a bit, 20 minutes and it cranks and starts when I hold my foot to the floor. Could it be that the fuel in the line drains back to the tank from the anti- vapor locking return line? Then I have to get fuel back to the carb in order to start it.

Holding it to the floor doesn't give it extra gas except on the initial motion to the floor. One shot. It actually causes more air to be involved when you crank it over with the carb wide open. That's what I do if the car is flooded. Hold it to the floor and turn it over until it starts.

Two things: if it takes a pump on the pedal to get it started, you may have some evaporation issues/loss of fuel from the carb bowl due to the hot engine. If you need to hold it down to get it to start, the engine is flooded due to fuel boiling out of the carb or internal carb leaks when hot.
