Applied power this past weekend, tested all circuits and electrical items, only one issue, the front left speaker is not functioning. Haven't had a chance to troubleshoot that, was busy trying to get the base setup on the ECU.

Here's a couple fun shots, the interior lights, halos, and gauge lights, pretty happy with how it turned out. Keeping with the white/blue theme paid off IMO.

Haven't had it on the road yet, but, used dual hi/lo element LED bulbs in all 4 holes, and wired the bulbs so when on high, both bulbs on each side light both elements, so I expect them to be super bright. Add that to the halos, yeah, pretty sure they will be bright.

They are the highest LED bulbs available that are DOT approved, but with both elements on on 4 bulbs, I suspect that would not be DOT approved.

They are like a Euro enclosures, so it will throw low, wide, and with high beams, far.

I did halogens that way on the 442, and wow, it's like a 747 landing. And these LEDs are brighter.

I did an LED light strip in the trunk, used the OE trunk light fixture as a switch, soldered a wire to the bulb base (no glass in it), and mounted the strip along the leading edge underside.

That too is blue, is about 2 feet long, and lights the trunk well.

Adjusted the rockers, and as I was turning the engine over to the next round, noticed a couple were loose. Closer inspection made me realize that 5 lifters had collapsed. I loosed them up, primed the engine, and 3 or the 5 pumped up. Primed a couple more times, 1 more pumped up, but still have 2 collapsed. Uhg.

Guess I will be pulling the intake and valley to swap out lifters. These are the new style Comp 857s.

Yeah, I cleaned them and didn't prime them as recommended, but guess there was still some crap in there, or straight up failed/defective. Have a call into Butler to see what the return process is.

I was thinking I probably should have adjusted them before I put the valley pan on, but needed to measure for pushrods, and wanted to get it to the body shop as soon as possible. So, kind of a rock & a hard place thing.

I have heard far less failures with the Morel/Lunati ones, probably should have gone with those. Oh well, too late now, kind of.

Butler said to call Comp directly, and if they can't help me, to call them back and will work something out. Reason being, the lifters were purchased in APR 2017.

On a positive note, I did redo my one trans fitting/line. I had some AN fittings on there, a 90 degree elbow, but it was too close to the trans tunnel (a common problem with 4L80E retrofits).

Solution for me was to use a specialty banjo fitting, and a 45 degree AN male-male swivel fitting. Worked great, and now have tons of room.

Here's a couple pics, even though it's kind of difficult to see the detail, but you get the idea. The lower fitting isn't a problem, and a pre-bent truck line kit works as a basis.

So just to say, no other mods aside from the crossmember are required for the swap. In some cases, you might have to hammer a little by the rear harness connector, but it would be minimal. Just remember to trim the 'ears' off the case.

I am going through a similar situation with my brother's motor we first started in June with 857 lifters bought in 2017 and the OF HR cam. On start-up one of the lifer wheels broke and I couldn't really tell because the car ran ok, just not perfect. Fast forward and took the valley pan off and saw the broken lifter and scarred lobe it was on. Comp fixed the cam and sent new lifters. Started it up and 5 lifters plungers immediately collapsed and wouldn't come back up, installed just as Comp recommended. Comp sent 3 new pairs and I am still trying to get rid of a tick on one side. Almost 4 months of BS. I had documented everything with pictures and had all the original receipts and Comp took care of everything, but this is ridiculous. No need to go through this because of poor quality lifters.

Wow that's not giving me a warm and fuzzy. I'm actually seriously considering switching to Morels, but think I will have to go to a slightly longer pushrod, adding to the cost. But it might be less painful in respect to frustrations and additional work.

I can probably sell the 857s, once I get the replacements sent to me. Butler stepped up and is going to swap out the stuck ones for free, very nice of them. They are only warrantied for 1 year, and it was 2.5 years since I bought them.

Body/cup/seat height on the 857s are 2.49, the Morels/Lunatis are 2.71. So I may have to go to a shorter pushrod, will have to recheck. My desired pushrod length for the 857s is 8.821, so I got 8.80s. So they are a little shorter, maybe it will work out, and not have to get 8.750s.

Uhg.

EDIT: Oh wait, 8.821 - .22 = 8.601, so would have to go to 8.50s. Crap.

I used $190 Smith Brother's PRs on my brother's motor and I would prefer to not have to buy new lifters and new PRs.

Yeah, I got the Smith Bros ones too. Maybe I will get lucky and need them in another engine. (as far a stretch as that may be, still hopeful!)

Try running some detergent for a little while, like Marvel Mystery Oil or the like. It may free it up.

And I'm pretty sure I'm switching to morels, I'm not up for that like of issue, I've have stupid amounts of time in this thing, pretty burnt working on it, I need the benefit of being able to enjoy it some. This is the longest I've gone without a musclecar, I'm jones-ing!

Going forward, I'm just doing solid rollers, no issues with those.

Couple pics of the collapsed lifters. The one actually has the cup cocked in there, didn't even know that could happen!

Before anyone asks, that one spot in one of the pics that looks like it might be a chunk of something, it's not, it's the ends of the snap ring/wire retainer.

I've never seen them cock like that, like how can that happen? It's a machine fitment and close tolerances, how can that think cock?

No more Comps for me, that did it, and like I said, I took all the precautions. I gave them baths in mineral spirits, worked them, soaked them in oil, and coated the lifter bores with assembly lube.

I installed the valley pan before I had the pushrods, I was in a hurry to get the engine between the frame rails and the body up to the body shop, so I didn't lose my spot. If I lost the spot, it could take 2 years before I could have gotten it in there.

Uhg.

EDIT: I had the engine all taped off, and then wrapped it in packaging plastic wrap, the kind you just keep wrapping around, and that thing looked like a big ball of plastic wrap, no way anything got in there. The valley was clean when I popped the valley pan.

So working thru some other final items as I wait for my replacement HYD rollers, figured I'd mock up the exhaust, get it all in place, loosely tighten the clamps, which allows me to drive up to a shop and have it welded.

I run the twin splitters as is 'correct' for 70-71, and have used the Pypes SGA12 kit in the past. Laid out the parts, and was going to install the tailpipe hangers, which the one that is towards the rear became a head-scratcher.

Instructions state that you can visit the Pypes site, and view the gallery of installs for clues/etc for installation. Ok. Well, there are not very good pics, especially for the tailpipe hangers, so I grabbed a catalog and looked at the hangers & brackets page.

I notice there's the hanger that is included in the kit, and under it, it says "not to be used when using splitters". Hm. Thankfully, there, just below it, is the 'correct' brackets and hangers for when using the splitters, and ordered them, along with the hardware. Also decided to order the 'correct' hardware for the muffler hangers/bracket too, which come with those funky large washers. Cool.

Then, this all made be wonder: Um, I ordered the Pypes exhaust kit that is supposed to be correct for a splitter/valance exit app, so why does it not include the correct brackets, hangers, and hardware?

Maybe this is the reason why so many end up having the tilted tips on the tailpipes?

~sigh~

What HR lifters did you go with? Did you talk to Comp about your old ones?
