I think you are right, It might very well have started in 1980. Probably just wide spread use by 1985?
I recall reading an article about the halogen bulb & recall it was developed a decade or two earlier in Europe?
I tried to Google for the article but couldn't find it.

It's been along time, I remember looking at the 80 and 81 cars at dealers. There was an orange one with charcoal graphics at a dealer new, I almost bought it but wasn't a fan of the motors those years.
Hers one side of the ones on my car, I got them put in today
It may be in the number crunch series in HPP, I have all of them at my hoard, I'll have to look up the 80&81 issues.

They would need different wiring, I'm not familiar with the last few years but haven't heard of it.

What's the obsession with original headlights, at least so many of them? Just so you have a few for spares and then got carried away? They aren't legal here for RHD, tossed the ones I had.

1.

As I have stated before, the 1977 lamps look totally different to the trained, discerning eye, even from 15 feet away.

2.

I like them.

3.

Since they are just a basic incandescent bulb, they have a very finite lifespan. Therefore, I always have several on hand to replace the blown ones.

At least as early as '80 models.
Ordered my '80 Turbo SE in the summer of '79. clicked off Halogen headlights and rear defrost on the pre intro order form, but did not order the HD alternator. Zone kicked it back, stating, had to order HD alt. Zone kicked it back more than once, as also tried to order an overide on the interior.

I think I have 2-3 orig 1981 order forms, I'll look on there to see if there is a box to check off.

Firedan looked on all his parts cars for me and found not two lamps were the same, the Guide font, size of letters and patterns in the glass were all diff. So what does a 77 lamp look like ?

TT5 option started in '79.

68ragtop, there is an ink stamp on the back of the bulb for date coding. Usually hard to read or wiped clean.

I have a full set up hi/low T3's that came from my late father in laws lemans that I striped for parts over 13 yeas ago. They might even be the original ones, as he bought the car new in 68. I was excited to have them & even more so when I found they all worked. Is there a way to tell them apart from the repops?
The repo T3's have DOT letters on the front of the glass.

Thanks for the info, No DOT here Any significance to the J27 on the top?

I'm not that familliar on the T-3's, I did a lot of work on my buddy's 70 Z, I'm not sure what lamps go in it. Did T-3 stopped at 1970 ? I was going to ask the T-3 guys this year at the Packard swap but they weren't there. Would it be the same lamps as say Norwoods 1970?

Not sure why this one I have above has a J27 on the top. Most I see (in pictures) have a large "2" on the top. This one above was in my 68 GTO when I got it. I have not removed it from the bucket to see the date code (if it still there) The other three were old G/E's The other 4 originals I have are in storage a few miles from my home, so It might be a few weeks before I can look at them. Interesting

Years ago, whenever I would get a car & go through the steps of detailing it I would usually replace the headlamps, taillights & side marker bulbs. It always bothered me when a bulb would be out, or a headlight not as bright as the other so I would just change them all out before it could even happen. the halogens were brighter & it was a cheap upgrade. I probably tossed a lot of working oem bulbs 20-30 years ago. Funny how things change......

I haven't seen one date code, I had to clean them up myself, I didn't see any. I'm not sure if my 4 are from a 78 or what, but the font is all the same, so I'm happy with them. I'll prob get the jamoke at a car show come up and say, hey, those aren't correct. Lmao.

What year started the halogen bulbs?
Halogen high beam headlights were first offered as an option in 1979. High-beams only. RPO code is TT5.

TT5, I'll look it up in the 1979 Selling Facts.
