arGreat Picture, When I looked close I laughed.
The Tiger-head on top of car is similar to one I used at the local Trunk or Treat event Had a blast with over 1K+ kids coming out.

You're too crazy Jeff. I like the Tiger on the window of the dealership. I don't think I've seen a complete one.

My kids wear pants like that now. "Flood pants" we used to call them when I was a kid.

We used to call them "High Water" pants when I was a kid in high school.

That’s ok, at least they weren’t falling down your ass showing your boxers like the clowns of today.

AUTO SHOW CUSTOM.
The headlight Bezels are indeed painted with the same Custom Paint/Color on the whole car.
Also appears the Bumper Bolts have been Shaved and the Folding Top Boot looks to be Custom Molded. Would love to find/see more FULL COLOR shots of this '66.

What are the chances that this photo is not from a '66 show but rather a '65 or earlier show and this '66 is a prototype?

It was taken at the 1966 Chicago Auto Show

So why did they have a "custom" new car there? I've never seen that before. Usually manufacturers will display prototypes or concepts, not customs.

Pontiac (and nearly every other manufacturer) always had a custom car placed on the main turntable. Production models were scattered around the rest of the exhibit. It was all about pulling people to your display, and a custom car usually did the trick. Even today it's common for a manufacturer to have a concept or custom as the focal point in their exhibit.
The '66 GTO custom at the Chicago Auto Show had a few girls, with GTO sweaters, as models. Recently donated to the Pontiac-Oakland Museum were the original GTO letters used at that auto show, donated by the man in charge of Pontiac exhibition displays back then. On the West Coast, Pontiac used a chestnut brown-colored '66 GTO ragtop with wire basket wheels and brown interior. They also had a custom '66 Grand Prix called the Grand Corniche on the show circuit that was light blue color with a half-roof. Mike

Here are some vintage pictures of my 66 GTO convertible. The first one was taken the day my parents bought it, April 6, 1966, in Seattle. The second one was taken a few months later (September 3, 1966) in the Boise, Idaho area. The other two were taken in Phoenix in 1987, when I was in high school, right after my brother bought his 68 Road Runner (he still has that, too, and my parents still live in the house where they're pictured).
I have a few more pictures from April 1966, but I have to get them off of another device, so I will post them later. Importsmasher
