No, they didn't have a ball knob. They looked like this reproduction.

Not that I know of...sounds like the aftermarket Hurst shifter knob. As necdb3 replyed, the leather style knob is correct for 72 F-Bodies.

The early knobs, up through 75 or so, had a raised medallion on top rather than the flat top on this Ebay one. This is a repop of the later style.

Raised medallion vs flat top
Here is an example of some early '70s 2nd Gen Firebird Formula 3 speed knobs that I had a while back. Same deal with these as the Trans Am 4 speed (early '70s) knobs; the top clear medallion is raised up above the surface of the vinyl.
Later GM changed the design of the knob so that the medallion sets perfectly flush with the top of the knob. I am not sure of the exact year (or mid-year) which that change occurred but I can tell you that finding a really nice early '70s Pontiac F-body raised top 4 speed knob will not be easy. Those are very rare.

This is the correct knob for a 1972 4 speed. As Pete mentioned, the center medallion is raised.

This is an NOS shift knob that I used on my 1977. It matched the original exactly.

the knob that you received with an (aftermarket) Hurst "Competition Plus" shifter fits this description;
It was a white knob with a small sheet of selectable (black background) inserts, that you placed in the knob, and then put the clear top on; When I got my far it had an aftermarket 'Competition Plus' shifter, complete with this knob. You may have been able to buy this knob by itself, as it was something of a universal knob - considering it could have several different shift patterns. Here, this is a picture my drawer of fun stuff; The 'Competition Plus' knob is pictured on the left, beside the all white knob vintage Hurst knob.

3 speed knobs vs 4 speed
My post shows two different 3 speed knobs. One 1970 1/2 and one later 70s knob: (I think 73 or 74) For some reason the 1970 and 1/2 three speed knobs back then did not have to have the shift pattern in them. The Formula & Trans Am 4 speed knobs all had the shift pattern in the clear top. (R-1-2-3-4) The 70 1/2 Firebird TA knobs had a red almost a chrome-like silver & black design to the pattern and then in 71 or 72 they changed the art work to more; argent silver & black. Photos above of the car's interior show the later design art for the 4 speed knob.

in my lats post, I actually have all three of the 2nd gen Firebird three speed knobs; 1) pre-production/very early simulated leather with red insert (pictured directly below the white Hurst knobs) 2) 1970-1973(?) oversized black ball (pictured to the right (worn original with stripped threads) and below (NOS) the white Hurst knobs) 3) 1973(?)+ simulated leather with shift pattern (pictured below the #1 knob; NOS; in the original bag with paperwork) I have seen one very worn example on eBay of the #3 knob where the shift pattern insert was sitting on a raised chrome edge - but it was priced a little too high for my liking, considering the condition. For some odd reason, I have an afinity for three speed stuff BUT, I thought this thread was about a correct 1972 four speed shifter knob? Because this is the 100% correct one: simulated leather knob with shift patter insert on raised chrome edge. There is a myriad of repop 1972-81 4 speed Firebird knobs on the market ranging from terrible looking, to appearing bang on like a latter flush mount NOS knob.

Last week I was sent a link to a FB listing of a late '70's 4spd knob being offered up for sale for $30.
In the pics, the simulated leather of the knob had a grayish tint to it, didn't look right. Fortunately have nice original sim leather 4spd knobs for all of our 2nd Gens.
