Crazy Airborne Dragster Recovery
Is it a crash, a recovery, both? For sure really lucky.
He should get out of the car and say "Yeah, I meant to do that..." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tnqMpz-EIQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTog-mTg2js

Wow, and just why no wheelie bars?

Pure and simple.... he was one lucky SOB.
Edited for H-IS: I don't believe wheelie bars are required in all classes. And I don't know what class this Camaro was in. But I will check with my parts store owner who races a 67 Nova putting out 1100+ HP. And yes, he does have a wheelie bar installed on the Nova. I have a copy of the links on a USB drive so he can see this... if he hasn't already.

Best thing he ever did was throw that chute. That would have been really nasty.

Wow!
Nice recovery Mav’!!
Agree the chute helped keep the car pointed in the right direction, but the driver is either really composed or really lucky! Wow!! |

So how much air pressure would it take to do that?

THAT is is crazy. I smell bad stinkin rules. My Race bird had wheelie bars, detachable sure, but what a relief.

he crossed after the finish line so he was good. lol.
they put a right framerail in the car and he qualified and went a few rounds after the "incident.". takes balls to drive them cars in the first place. and even bigger ones to crawl back in 2 days later on a trackside fix

Rules not allowing wheelie bars in the fast classes are in place to "enhance the fan experience". Race fans in the stands love to see stuff like this, cars on the very ragged edge of disaster every time down the track. Drivers know the danger and embrace the reality or they can choose to do something else. Personally, I think they take a heck of a risk. This guy was very lucky/skillful in setting the car very gently back on the racing surface and keeping it straight. Fresh pair of underwear and a frame rail and he was right back in the hunt. Good for him.

If you watch in slow motion you can see that he really gets the chute out pretty darn early. Good awareness of his situation and decisive action, combined with keeping the mindset that he's still "driving the car" meant he was ready to keep going when back on the ground. In other words, he never gave up. A++.

They didn't tell you that he continued racing that day did they. My buddy that has the parts store here was at that race and saw it happen. He told me this morning they had to "fix" what broke, but they were back on the track that day going full out down the track.
