Power steering squawk
My power steering pump squawks when turning left.
You can feel it in steering wheel. I replaced the pump two years ago. The belt is tight. Could this be a bad gear box? |

Apparently nobody really knows

I think it could be either or, but in general I would suspect the pump over the box. Especially, if the car is driven long distances at elevated rpm's.
The type 1 pumps create a lot of heat with rpm and that heat breaks down the pumps really quickly. It's one of the reasons that first gen F-bodies had power steering cooling lines from the factory for any car with a 3.55 axle ratio or shorter. Of course most of those lines were removed long ago, but there's a reason for them.

I don’t drive my car on long distance nor at elevated RPMs. The longest trip it has seen is 17 miles once a month or so to buy gas. Typically the trips are 5 miles.

Shot in the dark,
Same brand fluids ? Same hot n cold ? Wondering when a box hits its turn limits if they can cause a pressure spike when they wear

Has the replaced pump done this since day one on the motor?

No it didn’t. It seems to have started slowly and progressively got worse.

Well if that’s the case then it would seem to be the pump has gone south!

Well, all the 68-70 Pumps are the same Pump, unless i dreamt this, i have seen 3 different regulator inserts:
Big Car got 1600 psi GTO got 1400? psi Firebird got 1200 psi. Surely i put the high pressure regulator in my birds, and probably the GTOs. Have no experience with GM pump squeals. Thought only Fords did that. The light wheel feel has been great, no belt squeals with the toothed V-belts. |

The last pump I ordered from OPGI for my 65 GTO was the wrong one to fit my application and had to send it back. I was able to get one from Rock Auto that fit. Not sure what PSI it was. May have been the lower one. I don’t recall any of those places stating what PSI regulator. Do you have any suggestions to where I can get one? |
