I've heard that they work by listening for ultrasonic sounds made by the leaks.

I once (decades ago) caught a Volkswagen on fire with a can of that. No significant damage, but a lesson learned, More cautious now, always have an extinguisher handy.

That is correct. I have used it and it does work.
