Default What is it?

Disassembled and 350 a few days ago. Found this in the water jacket. Was visible when timing cover was removed. It has been sandblast to get a better look at its construction. The thin section appears to be hollow with a rod going through it. Any ideas?

Could it be the reminents of an old meat thermometer?

If it was in a water jacket, could it be an old pick tool used on the line to dig out sand from the block casting???

I found one like that in the jacket behind the water pump.

I wonder if it's something like an anode rod?

Interesting. Must be some type of core support or remnants of filled channel for the molten iron to follow

If you can distinguish material between cast iron or steel you may have a clue.

If it's the same material as the block (ie a vent that got filled during casting) I would expect it to be somewhat brittle. If steel (ie a tool or core support) it might have more ductility...???

Just speculating.. but is quite interesting. Thanks for posting!

I also found one in an engine I was disassembling many years ago. There were no digital cameras to make instant photos, or an internet to discuss it over, so I gave it a puzzled stare for a few seconds then tossed it in the trash and kept going.

Interesting...
I found a pocket screwdriver once and on another block I found all the old core plugs had been pushed in the block when the guy installed new ones! No wonder it ran a little warm.
