Default Inner Cowl passenger side on 70 GTO

So I am trying to use the passenger side Ames inner and outer Cowl on a 70 GTO, and it seems to stick out from the center of the car 5/8" more than the driver side does.
Does it matter, or do I cut it and weld it to the correct size (which I am not good at)? I will be doing patch work on the driver cowl as well but the passenger side had accident damage up high plus the rust down low.
