Default #11 heads

Hello, I just bought a 1970 400ci.(yb) out of a catalina. My question is how good are these heads (#11). I know they are 1.96/1.66, is it worth the money to machine in the larger valves. I think it has a 80cc chamber. I would like to mill this down to about 71cc or 72cc. Maybe I should just buy the set on ebay and be done with it, nice #13's. I'm going to rebuild the engine to put in my 76 T/A. Would like to have around 400hp. I have 3000.00 set aside just for the motor. Do you all think that is enough money or am i just dreaming? Any input would be just great! Thanks, Brad

go for a set of 6X heads.or you can do the #16,62,48,12,13,670 route for the 72-75 cc range.you'll save money with the big valve heads to start with.

Thanks for the reply, I have 6s heads on the car now. I was just hoping the #11 would work. Do you think the#13's on ebay is worth the money. The guy wants 112.00 to ship them. The bid is at 152.50. Do you know where I can buy any 71-72cc heads. I 'm looking to have a 9.5-1/10-1 CR Thanks, Brad

FBC1959:

I suppose if I offered him a set that I have for no cost it would make others mad. LOL

Brad you would be astounded with the kind of performance you get get from a fairly stock set of 68-70 small combustion chmber/ small valve heads... keep in mind that the old Super Duty cars all ran heas with what we now call a "small valve" configuration...

I have a set of '68 350 heads on my '70 L74 right now, and I do not know if I can gauge a measurable performance difference - I realise everyone say you need large valves, but it all comes dwn to properly matching you components - you need to have cleaned up runners, and a good cam to see the true benifit of large valve heads...
My understanding is that the large versus small valve heads (lets say for 1970 'D' port castings) were essentially the same casting, with only different machined combustion chambers, and different valve sizes...

Since you're going to match a cam to your transmission and differential gear set, keep in mind where you are most likely to be in the rpm band, and from there, you should know what you need in a cylinder head...

Since your two casting numbers were 1970 parts (#11 & #13) I think you should realise that it is gennerally accepted that #13's had a larger combustion chambers that #12's, and therefore, should be about equivalent to a #11 as far a CC's are concerned...

I hope I've been of some assitance...

O.K I'll stick with the #11 heads. I talked with Dan at Harry Heads in Sioux City, IA and he said the same thing. Thank You, Brad
