Well that 73 sd got up to 105,600.00 without making reserve. Wonder if he has a deal going off-line in order to save some big ebay money(good for him) ? seems like something going on without any last minute activity.

BUMP ~ Anyone with any ideas on this???

What looks like the metal version of the egr thermal valve was on the passenger side of the intake. His restorer reversed them.

I've never seen one of these with that odd looking connector on the bottom (check what I have circled in red in the first pic). Any idea what this is and a definitive answer as to which side it's installed on? My first thoughts were this was for the EGR, but then I thought that connector looking thing may actually be a vent that the valve for the distributor advance control has. Any insight would be appreciated.

The second pic is the type I usually see for EGR. Later ones were made of metal with a reduced sized upper portion.

My automatic car has the metal type which I believe to be factory installed due to the cars low mileage and original motor.
I must say I have never seen the one circled but always thought the plastic ones where the later versions ? it probably came off another series car that had some luxury options.
Interesting to know,

It's been for sale on the Hemmings site for some time. FYI, as of last saturday $50K would buy it. That amount may have changed by now since he already has one bid of $49K-if it's actually a legit bid.

Default Firewall Holes

Hi everyone,

Here is my firewall with the holes that I need to fill. I believe #6 is for the ground, #5 is for a resistor. The other holes I am not positive, but I believe that #1 and #2 need to be filled also, 3 and 4 I have no idea. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Brew. Here's more clarification. He has that metal one too. It was on the Passenger side, where it should be. This oddball plastic one was on the Drivers Side. His restorer switched them presumably because he's never seen anything like that before and thought it was on the wrong side.

My car, which is a very early built SD has the plastic version of the EGR thermal valve, btw. It has an early date code on it that follows suit. I'll have to ask my friend to check the date code on his valve if he can and to see if it has any EGR marking on it too.

I've seen a lot of poncho engines, and have never come across anything like that one in the picture.

SD73 - I have the exact same pieces you show in your photo's, with the EGR/CARB labeled one located on the passeger side of the water crossover. I believe they are original to the car, but I'm not 100% certain. My SD is a 4 spd and built the 3rd week of July. Hopefully that helps.

Ken - thanks for the cam information. I feel real fortunate to have a true early HO Racing designed cam for an SD. My brother and I have HO's entire newsletter collection from the mid 70's to teh last issue in 1979(?). They are fun to re-read, especially the classieds where 73/74 SD's were for sale for $4000 for low mileage cars.

Larry - I'm with you. I will install that HC-62 with new lifters (I'm not sure about installing new Rhoades, but maybe another make that aren't so clakky sounding). Your '73 SD clone was sweet looking and quick with that low of compression. I too have the "long" single trough SD replacement pistons from TRW that are pretty heavy compared to todays Ross or JE's. Not sure I'd get down to the 12's, but it's with a try.

Norwood - I probably won't do the big bird decal, even though I like them. The original owner told me that it wasn't orderd for the car. The dealer ordered it without the hood bird because the dealership owner didn't like the fact it as a big decal and could peel off in a car wash (which were pretty brutal back in those days). In fact the original owner doesn't remember the small nose bird on the car when he owned it. Who knows????

takid455 - I really like the idea of an in-progress class. I believe that GTOAA used to have one unofficially. I gravitate to the cars that are original and/or barn finds no matter how rough they are. Patina in good.

Anybody going the the Pure Stock Drags in Stanton, MI this weekend? If you are, I'll be teching in the Pontiacs. Stop by and introduce yourself.

SD455DJ, are you saying you have both those installed on the same intake? Your's has the one with that little vent thing on the bottom? Is that correct, is it a vent?

Thanks a lot for our help!

SD73 - Yes, my cars intake had both of the thermactor valves in your pictures. The one you are questioning is on the drivers side and the EGR/CARB valve is on the passenger side. I'm not sure that anything attaches to that port on the bottom that you circled. As you suggest, it may be a vent.

Thanks for the help, DJ! That one was driving me nuts! If you get a chance some time, could you post a pic? I'd love to have another for my reference.

SD73 - I'll try to get photo's the next time I get to my brothers where I store the car, so it might be a while. We are busy this weekend with the Pure Stock Drags with close to 150 cars teched in today. Pontiacs are leading the single make count by a large margine with many running in the mid 12's such as Paul Aragona's '74 SD455 TA and Chuck Lumbardi's '73 SD455 Formula. Rick Mahoney's '68 RAII Firebird is the 5th quickest at 11.82. The #1 qualifier is Julie Pennington's L88 Corvette at 11.72. Tomorrows weather is going to be better.

Sweet car. In fact, a lot of nice Pontiacs out there. I thought the SDs were surprisingly scarce...

You have to love that thing pulling out of the hole popping the wheels off the pavement. WOW, how cool is that,
