I've had a Tic, Tic, around 5 & 7 in my 389 since I bought it. Everyone said it was a lifter..
I just opened up the valve covers to put on my Kool Krane Nuts and found crud built up around the edges and some silver oil . The passengers side is perfectly clean.

I honestly do not know where to start diagnosing this problem. I really could use some good technical advise

D@mn am I pissed.......

first thing I noticed, where are your guide plates?

Push rods could be rubbing on the head, check for wear on your push rods?

Also, the tic tic tic, is it constant?
get worse when you rev it up?
get worse under deceleration?

Just to ease your mind, bearing fragments would have bronze in it!

Yes, the tic is always there and seems to be getting worse.
As far as accelerating or deceleration I haven't notice a dramatic difference. I was under the car today while it was running and could hear the tic through the exhaust pipe, that is what erked me to install the new kool nuts.
Guideplates were not there when I bought the car, should I start looking for a set???. The motor had just been done for 3K by the previous owner and it has less than 1K miles since that.

Where do I start diagnosing this problem??

Thanks

66 model heads do not have guide plates. My guess is bad lifter or lifters or flat cam lobe or lobes.

wanna race? gimmie the move--

OK, I've never performed this kind of surgery, but I'm no coward .

I guess any way I look at this the intake has to come off. Is this a good place to start??
Pull the rocker nuts and check the push rods??
As I take this apart, can the rods, rockers, springs, nuts and such be mixed or store them separately per cylinder??

HMmmmmmmmmmmmmm..........

First rotate the engine over with the valve covers off to see if you have a rocker arm not going up as far as the rest are. if so you have found a problem :P pull that lifter and check it out, if its not bad pull cam and have it checked.
Check push rods while your in there.

Another thing to check before you dive into the motor are the rocker arm studs. On the early heads they used pressed in studs not screw in, see if they are pulling out by measuring there length and compare to a known good stud.

with out questions there can be no answers

65 TOPLESS,

Here are some ideas for you to try:Find a doctor's stethascope and listen thru the valve cover(with engine running)...Take off cover and look at the valve lash, loose rockers, check them all?Look at valve springs and shims, studs and pushrods..here's a little tip; place a strong but
small magnet At each end of the head so all oil has to drain by the magnet and will pick-off the metal ??? If you can't find make sure you drain the oil & filter..I think you will find something
rubbing or a valve shim that is wearing..Hope this helps....Dave...1033/stock

65 Topless, DO THIS.... run it without the cover on. When idling check out the rocker travel on the holes youv'e isolated the noise to. All else fails (usually does) grab ahold of the rockers in question with your hand (yes while running). Just keeep your fingers out of the way of springs, etc. See if you can feel something loose, or if the noise changes. Try pushing down on the rockers in ?. What your trying to do is isolate the probelm down...then address it

Thank you Gentlemen for the replies.....

In the morning I will try to identify the suspect lifter, push rod, etc.....

Also,

From what I gather from you guy's is that I may not be totally screwed, just because there are some VERY fine shavings under the 1,3,5,7 valve cover ???

The oil is clean ( dipstick ) and the passengers side 2,4,6,8 looks good?

Thanks

You need to cut the filter open & inspect it for damage. If you find bearing material in the filter you have problems unless its a very small amount.
