Default 347 Pontiac fuel pump

Nephew in Texas has a nice original 57 GMC with the original 347 engine. States the fuel pump is leaking and the box stores try to sell him a small block Chebby pump.
Will a late model Pontiac pump work on the old 347 Pontiac engine or does he have to find something different than the current pumps available today??
Thanks in advance, Jerry

I had the fuel pump go out on my '57 GMC 347 on a road trip. Only replacement available nearby was from a late 60's Pontiac with a return line. I put a short piece of rubber hose on the return, put a bolt into the rubber hose and clamped it with a small hose clamp. Ran it that way for years.

Darn amazing that the pump even lasted this long!

So the GMC does not have vacuum wipers?

Thumbs up

Thanks, Bill and Steve.
I asked him about vacuum wipers and he wasn’t sure if the fuel pump also powered the wipers or not.

He’s in San Angelo, Tx and they get very little rain there anyhow, so not a big concern for him. I explained he could pick up vacuum somewhere on the intake if he had to.

Good to know for sure that later fuel pumps will work on the 347 engine. I’ll pass that info along to him .

Many thanks, guys

I've heard the Chevy and Pontiac fuel pumps are the same, the difference is the arms. Pontiac uses the long arm to pump from the eccentric on timing chain and Chevy uses the short arm and pushrod. Ive always wanted to swap arms and see if it would work

If he has never changed a Pontiac pump before make sure he knows to bring number 1 to TDC, this way he will not have to fight as much to get the pump to bolt up.

Vacuum wipers were standard with electric wipers as an option. I found a used electric wiper motor not too long after I bought the truck in 1990.

GMC Master Parts Book only lists one pump for the Pontiac-based V8 engines, so I'm guessing that they did not offer the two chamber pump.
