Default 326HO

Tearing into the 326HO I bought. found a missing valve spring on #1 exhaust. Pulled the valley cover and found sludge buildup for days....Is the driver side exhaust manifold supposed to dump in the front? Has the correct 3502S carb, and 9772652 heads. Came with the torque tube and auto transaxle with "N" 3.09 rear.

Almost no lip at all at the top of the cylinders.

Valves all look good.

It's going to need a total rebuild, don't mess with the valves unless your 100 percent sure they are not the original 2 PC valves.Tom

Default Manifold

All 63 V8 cars had the driver side exhaust manifold dump to the front. Does your pass. Side exhaust manifold have a heat riser valve?

2 piece valves???? I don't think so, but I will make sure tomorrow. C5Farmer, it looks like the passenger side did, but it has been mangled.

With these odd size bores (3.781) can anyone point me to a piston source?

OK, Tom. Two-piece valves are something new to me. Where and how are they connected? Can they be replaced with one piece units?

The 4 cyl. that I have done both had one piece valves. One was a '63, the other a '62. The '62 did have this rebuilder tag on the block, though.....

All of the original equipment valves are 2-piece.

The valve head is welded to the valve stem, however it's not really apparent that they're 2-piece until one fails/comes apart and takes some or all of the engine with it.

They should be replaced with a quality one-piece stainless steel aftermarket valve at rebuild time if possible. If you can't find them in the correct size you can often find a slightly larger valve with the correct stem length and have the head cut down to the proper size, sometimes a common small-block Chevy valve can be used.

Are these blocks the "thick wall" version? How far can they be safely bored?

A thick layer of sludge always beats a crusty layer of rust.

But yeah, it's the most sludged-up Pontiac engine I've ever seen.

Finished tearing the engine down today. Engine turned over freely. Inside was pretty decent considering the sludge in the valley. The bearings were worn, but not too bad.

Sonic check is the only way to tell. With the one year only bore size, pistons are limited. Can maybe go to a Pontiac 350 piston, but then the valve reliefs are for the newer valve angle heads.

I'm working on the exhaust manifolds on my HO engine, one has GM1 and the other GM2 stamped in under the part number. What if any is the difference? Same part numbers on these exhaust manifolds as from my standard 326 engine.

Default HO info

I believe the HO heads #9772652 had 68 cc chambers and 1.92" intake valves.

The exhaust mainfolds are a mystery. All the part numbers I can find are the same for all 63 Tempest V8 engine exhaust manifolds, but I have been told that the HO engines had a different part number on the exhaust manifolds. That info I cannot verify.
The GM 1 and GM 2 castings may designate left or right side, or the shift that cast them. In 63 Pontiac did not produce a left side rear dump exhaust manifold so the V8 tempests got a big car right side exhaust manifold (without heat riser) turned around for the left side, hence the front dump.
