Default Dual Gate Shift Knob

I picked up a repro "correct" Dual Gate shift knob from the Parts Place because the threads on my old one are a little wonky. Impulse by via late night eBay browsing I guess. The new one is giant!

The one I have is about 1-5/8 and the replacement is about 1-7/8" in diameter. The smaller diameter looks more correct to me.

1-5/8" diameter ~15 year old reproduction.

1-7/8" diameter Parts Place knob. It seems more like a manual knob without a shift pattern. Note that it doesn't thread all the way down.

You would think a shift knob wouldn't be that complicated to reproduce correctly. To be fair, the quality on the PP replacement is good. Good idea on the helicoil.

What is the thread size on the stock shift ball?

Got curious and found this on McMaster: https://www.mcmaster.com/61095K73

1 5/8 diameter, 3/8-20 thread, brass insert. About $3 (available in 5/16-18 also)

I'm missing the original, might get one of these and heli-coil as necessary.

I used three of them not long about when building a speed wheel for my milling vice, very nice quality.

I've seen a few people put the larger than original balls on the shifter and also the Hurst T-handle. They just don't look 'right'.

I think you nailed it when you say it looks more like a stick shift knob, probably a repop or even just jobber shift ball for manual floor shift cars that they re-market for your application.

True enough. My TH400 has valve body mods and other mods and I have to shift it manually alot. Yes, the 1 7/8" knob looks and is incorrect, yet for for my usage it would be way more comfortable for my hand. If my trans was stock, it would stay in D when driving and the correct knob's comfort would not be an issue for me. FWIW
