Black cardboard cover
The a/c dash control unit on my 66 GTO has two small remnants of what appears to be a thin black cardboard/paper cover that goes over the top of the unit and is secured by two small T shaped spring clips. Does anybody have a picture of this cover attached to the control unit they could post?

Those covers were on non-AC cars too
I do not have a photo of the A/C cover however I have photos of an original cover for a 64-65 heater car. It is made from thin black cardboard with 2 metal "spring" push-pins securing it to the sides.
A very rare item, those are usually missing off of the bottom of the control.

Black cardboard cover
Thanks for the pics. This will help me recreate this piece for my A/C control. I’m lucky mine still had the 2 spring clips still in place.

If you don't mind, I'd be curious to see what you come up with in the end. I will have to create something for my car, too.

Black cardboard cover
I’ll try to remember to come back and post a pic but it may be some time before I get to that step.

What was the purpose of the cardboard?

Dust Cover/control protection.
Heavy Black Poster Board is a possible option.

Black cardboard cover
Here’s what I came up with. Never got a pic of this piece on an a/c control. Did find an intact cover on a spare non a/c control I had. Made a pattern of this then adjusted it to fit my a/c control. Test fit the pattern until it looked right then traced it onto a sheet of black poster paper.
