Default Installed Height

First time I used one of these tools I just want to confirm I am reading this correct. Look at picture should be 1.85 installed height.

Does 1 revolution of the thimble go from .7 to .8, etc? If so, it looks like .805 to me. I am a machinist by trade, although not an automotive machinist. But that’s what it looks like to me. I’m sure some automotive machinists will give you a for sure answer.

Looks like you are measuring 1.805" which may be surprising to you. Generally, after grinding valves and seats you would expect the installed height to increase, not decrease. But it's possible with different retainers or different valves with the keeper groove in a different position. If you truly want 1.850" and you have 1.805, you have 2 fairly easy solutions. 1. You can cut the spring seats .045". (not preferred). 2. Purchase a set of +.050" keepers. (my preference) Make sure there are no shims under the spring with your current reading.

That looks like a iron head which if it's a high comp era head had in stock form valves of about 5.110" in lenght, this made for a stock installed height of 1.600" to about 1.610", the tightest I have ever seen even with the 389/421 type heads was a installed height of 1.560".

You would have to be running RA4 lenght valves at 5.230" long to get into the installed height range of 1.800" to 1.830", unless you are working with the 455 SD casting.

With a valve job done which sinks the valves some, then yes you could be knocking on a installed height of 1.850".

If you have a Dial caliper( which you should!) use that to do a cross nstalled height check.
Even if you use it in a sloppy way you should with .015" of what you actually have there!

6X heads but has long valves in it I was checking my spring pressure yesterday and wanted to verify the installed height so yeah 1.805 not 1.850 I should know better but that's why I asked. 126 lb. on the seat and 300 lb. @ .5 lift so I am happy with that. I took a spring off while degreeing the cam and thought if felt weak to wanted to check it. Thanks for straightening me out I know this stuff but it's been a while. By the way I checked the seat pressure @ .805.

I know, I have to write it all each time and even then I misplace the sheet or paper!
I am starting a multi section binder /'folder now after 40 years of doing this stuff, lol!
