Valve Cover Bolts - Head Marking and Finish
After doing some research, it would seem that valve cover bolts used from '64-'68 were black (phosphate, zinc or cadmium?) where as '69+ were silver zinc or cadmium.
Going through my fastener stash from various projects & parts cars over the years, I've come up with a few variations. Would be curious to see pix of original restored or survivor assembly line bolts.

These two are original on my '68 400HO Firebird.
- The right side valve cover bolt has never been removed since it was placed there by the factory. - The left side was off once when Mr. Goodwrench opened the cover on 4/28/73 when I complained of a ticking noise. They replaced a valve pushrod and arm on #3 but told me the main problem was me using 10W30 in the summer instead of the 400HO recommended straight 30W. Sorry, I see I used the flash on one photo and trouble light on the other so there is a color difference. |
