1970 Formula unobtainable badge
I have posted here before about my interest in acquiring this badge;
LINK Rear trunk "400" badge (early '70 model year Formula only) #9808505 It has been suggested that it doesn't exist because no one here can recall seeing one on a production car - but it has been spotted; A members NOS part: I would still earnestly like this part, and while looking on eBay today I was thinking that I never asked what might seem to be an obvious question; For those of you who have seen or owned this badge, how does it differ from a 67-69 trunk badge? (I am guessing that it's thick at the top, where the 69 part is thick at the bottom... but that's just a guess) I really hope to hear some replies...

years ago a guy at pate swap meet that dealt in emblems (don't remember his name) had a discussion about formulas having the 400 emblem on the trunk lid. I dont recall ever seeing one that I "assumed" was a real deal from the factory.
would the emblem on a 69 firebird work??? it looks cool anyway and should have been done. just like putting a ra4 decal on the trunk lid of 69 and 70 gto's |

Sometimes, while figuring this stuff out, you are forced to read between the lines; My PHS shows that the "Formula 400" model was actually called "Firebird 400" in 1970 - which is what the 67-69 cars were called; With this in mind, it wouldn't be a huge stretch to deduce that the trunklid "400" badge was conceived as a 'carryover' thing to denote the relation between '69 "Firebird 400", and a '70 "Firebird 400"; Since the name was changed to "Firebird Formula 400" - with the intent of the model being subsequently called "Firebird Formula" (with a base 350-2bbl engine for insurance purposes) - it would make sense that the "Firebird 400" badge would be dropped - which is probably why few, if any, car were built with this badge... But I do like the badge; And would be very interested if anyone has compared the legit '70 badge to an earlier one.

Jonny, any thought on how early in the 70 model year these were discountined? My 02D Formula I believe has the original trunk lid and no sign of holes for this emblem...

Was the emblem supposed to be on the Formula 400 cars? It would seem redundant since it was the Formula 400. Or, was it only for the Esprite if it was optioned with the 400 engine?

The emblem on an Esprit makes a lot of sense. The rare less than exotic 2V 400 Esprit optional engine. Torquey cruising. The 350 cars got grille emblems and would guess the 400 esprit did too, but maybe they toyed with a trunk 400 emblem to elevate the status thing with fore and aft 400 emblems.

The Master Parts Catalogs all show it for '70 Formula 400's. Quote:
As I mentioned before, for the '70 model year all Pontiac inside literature called the 'Formula 400' a 'Firebird 400' - just like what the model was called for 67-69; Another tell is that the 'Firebird 400' RPO is the same one use for the Formula - "W66". The Esprit already had fender and grille emblems.

Was I in on that thread? I don't recall ever reading a comparison of this badge against a 67-69 trunk badge. Thanks

Yeah, this was one of those times when I was too lazy to look it up and between me having a ton of emblems & nameplates and it being listed as GP, I just didn't bother. Congrats

I knew it had to be you as soon as you said it sold for 25 bucks lol. No way to know unless you sold it. I was rereading the 70 only thread for the 8000th time and got to that part so I just decided to search the part number. When I found it I have to admit I scratched my head and search GP stuff for an hour making sure it wasn’t really a GP emblem (I’m sure the general has screwed stuff up like that before). This is why my wife hates me going away. I stay up all night in my room researching cars parts and spending money. She’s probably be happier if I was out drinking and being stupid. Honestly it’s probably gonna go on my snap on firebird box. Only formula I have is a ram air m-21 3.73 car. But maaaaaybeeeeee Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I remember these cars when new, even had a friend with one, and like others mentioned, I don't recall ever seeing one with a nameplate on the deck lid. Maybe it was one of those "early" things.

I’ve never seen one. Boss has a couple of the earliest I’ve ever seen and his didn’t have em either. Somewhere I saw a guy had essentially the 99th car and his didn’t have one. I’m going with they never came in one. That’s just my opinion. I feel like it was intended, but never done. My curiosity is if never approved or whatnot how did the emblems even get out? Wouldn’t they have been destroyed? How did dealers get em? Seems to me if they were nixed it literally was in the 11th hour and some dealerships didn’t send their parts back or at the least all of their supply.
