This is for the 455 in my 85 Cutlass, wrong forum I know but just pretend I said 85 grand prix . I have a 70 olds 455 with the C casting heads and I have to pull this engine to swap it into a solid body. While its out im going to regasket it and am thinking of dropping a different cam in as well as this engine has never really had any pop for some reason. I think i had a factory cam put in by the place that built it the first time. I would just like to know whats a good cam choice for a strong street motor? On 442.com faq section they suggest a mondello JM20-22 i think it was. I am also running a holley 900cfm pro jection on this motor. It is way to slow for a fuel injected 455. Any help from anybody knowledgeable in olds engines would be appreciated.
Thanks again!

JM 20-22 is what I would run eventhough I don't think Mondello's is what they used to be. Not knowing your combination I would say the JM18-20 is a good cam as well however it runs out of steam at 5000RPM.

I'm also looking for a street cam for a Olds, but a 403. So far I have heard don't go over 215 on the intake duration to preserve the low end but I have zero experience on the Olds family. Sound reasonable to me, I think the Crane 804541 seems like it would work well. I ran some DD2000 sims with various cams and the 403 liked this grind the best, it didn't lose much lowend torque and gave a substantial midrange boost.

Stu,

I am running a comp cams magnum 280 in my 403. The problem with 90% of the cams out there is they are mast produced for Chevy's and the like. Olds motors need more duration on the exhaust side due to the restrictive exhaust ports in the head. If you really want to put a "WALMART" cam in your motor..that is your business. The same cam profiles that work for a chevy work like hell in the OLDS. If I were going to go cheap...I would order an Engle or a Lugnati. If I wanted to do it right, I would order from Ultradyne 662-393-8511. The owner is an ex-comp cam designer. Mastermind of their cams...so I have heard.

His cams MAKE power and not excuses. Olds folks run the ultradyne cams b/c they are "SPECIFICALLY" ground for the OLDS. Not just using a chevy profile and grinding the lopes to fit in the olds.......

OK so I think the Crane P/N has more exhaust duration, and it doesn't spec out like any Chevy grind so what specifically are you concerned about? The Magnum 280H in the Summit catalog is a straight pattern cam and seems like a fairly radical cam for a street car. Is this the same unit as you have? If so why do you say to run something else? Bad results?

The comp cam 280 is a bit radical, but I am running a looser convertor, gears...ect. It is going to be removed soon. You are not going to know everything about the cam from just the specs in the magazine. You need to look at the cam card. What I would do is call Ultradyne and ask for techical advice. Your cam should be dialed into your motor not a one size fits all. I have having one ground for me. I have used Comp 268 and the Comp 280, both were just OK

How much is a custom grind from Ultradyne? What specifically was the issue on the two Comp units? Just looking for inputs.
