The 9.0 has some good points: easy to start when cold, and suprisingly decent fuel economy. If your friend sells that extra 9.0 tell him they are in high demand with the tractor pulling crowd.

I'll pass that one re the 9.0's.

i think you're right on the dt designation, and ih put them in everything at one time or another.

as someone else said, the dt series is the sbc in the diesel world. as long as the liner seals don't leak they run forever.

If I end up buying another medium duty truck, I'll buy a 466 powered IH.
Is that R185 a 406 or 450 inliner ? They also made a 372 & 501 if I remember correctly.

A 4BT is an excellent choice, reliable power in a package that will fit your application.

my r 190 dump truck has the rd 450 in it. talk about a fuel swallowing torque monster!

the r 185's got a rd 372/ 374 on lp in it, supposedly overhauled shortly before it was parked. it's followed up by an overdrive trans which i want for a hauler project. it also, curiously enoguh has air brakes on it. if this thing's tight enough i may stuff a dt466 in it and run it.

what i was initally on the hunt for was a 50's "s" series cab and clip to swap over on to an 1800 series school bus chassis.i had a NICE 54 r160 bought and the guy backed out of the deal at the last minute on it.

as you can tell binders hold a serious interest for me also.

Im told many give good service and fuel economy in step vans; what kind of hp/torque can they make ? They make 6.2/6.5 conversions for Land Rovers, but if I could find a good 3.9 for a reasonble sum Id go that route.

They can be hopped up just like their big brother 5.9. Pumps, injectors, turbo...I'd get a P-pumped engine if you're looking for power. You can get 350hp/500 lb/ft pretty easily from what I understand.
I was going to put one in my FJ40 until I got a steal on an LT1.

I was going to find an aluminum step van, take the 4BT and cut the body up for scrap and try and break even.

That little nissan will get 30 easily from what I've heard.
I had a gasser scout II awhile back, I always dug the binders for their 4x4's.

They used the 6-33 in forklifts and other industrial applications.

Speaking of forklifts, I just pulled a 2F out of my fj40, and it was propane powered.

The old Landcruiser 6 banger sure has a striking resemblence to the old Stovebolt Chebby'

So much in fact, I converted it to a GM HEI I pulled off a 77 Nova inline 6. All I had to do was swap the gear and have the flange machined off. I believe the oil pump is a bolt on too. The one I pulled from my cruiser has well over 300K on it.

The Toyota engine was knock off of the Chevy, GM sued them and collected fees for every one sold.

I had a 1982 Suburban with a 6.2. I bought it in '89 with a blown engine, the oil plug got left out at Jiffy Lube and it still went 20 miles before it broke! When I got all I could find was an engine from a medium duty truck, I used that, got a buddy that worked for Mack to tune it for me. That thing would smoke a 454 3/4 ton truck, both figuratively and literally! It was a 4x4 and would smoke the rear 32/12.50 BFG's with only 3.42 gears. It had a 700R4 from the factory but the torque killed 3 of them so I went to a t-400 until I got a pro built 700. A couple of years later a hurricane dropped a huge limb on the truck and totalled it. I put the whole drivetrain in my '75 Scout II. Talk about a beach burner!!!

Except the "knockoff" was much more reliable than the original

Have a link to where they sued?
