Looking at shoes for new 8 lug drums. What is inlite in original gm shoes? Are they ok to use and is .030 over size to much for new drums?
thanks cybeast |

I can't speak to size, but you for sure want the old style asbestos shoes or to get an old kit & reline them with the old style material. The stopping power is so much better & your new drums will last longer.

The new style pad material is very abrasive and will wear out the older drums. Another thing to watch out for is the steel liner on the old stock 8-lugs will warp out towards the shoes when the corrosion gets between the aluminum and liner. So while the ID is .030", there is a possibility that the liner is much thinner in places. A visual check will show whether the liner is getting thin anywhere. I had a back drum that was at the legal limit crack through the steel and grab the edge of the brake shoe. Only going about 10 MPH when it happened, but it locked up solid and twisted up the shoe and liner into a mess.

Joe - I just go the E-Bay route. I have not found any other source.

IMO, Arrowhead Components' NEW 8-lug drums are THE way to go.
Word around the campfire is that they are now available thru this forum's sponsor, Performance Years. |

What's the new style pad made of? I recently purchased a pair of front shoes on ebay...the manufacturer is Grey Rock. I believe they are the old asbestos style. Thanks. Vince |

New style pads have metal in them. I don't know what the base material is - probably still has some asbestos in it, but they are marketed as metallic pads & a magnet will slightly attract to them IME. I have compared results & the stopping is worlds apart.
'Grey Rock' sounds like good ol' asbestos to me!

Bruce,
Thanks again, I just bought a F/R NOS GM set on ebay, amazing the same GM numbers that are listed in the master catalog. I didn't realize until I read this thread that off the shelf metallic shoes are bad for 8 lugs.. Good thing I haven't put my NEW 8 lug drums on with metallics!! I agree with Mike, I bought my replacement drums from Arrowhead, John is a great guy to do business with. According to my Master Catalog it calls for Inlite for ALL P8 drums 65-70.

Here ya go!!
GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION was incorporated in the state of Delaware in 1916. General Motors manufactured asbestos drum brake linings at its Inland Division plant in Dayton, Ohio (1939-64) and Vandalia, Ohio (1962 to present) and asbestos disc brake linings at its Delco Moraine Division in Dayton, Ohio (1966-1985). The drum brake linings contained 50 to 75% chrysotile asbestos and were sold under the trade names of "Inlite" or "Delco." GM stopped selling drum brake linings in 1979 but continued to incorporate them in new cars. The disc brake linings contained 30 to 60% chrysotile asbestos and were sold under the trade name "Delco." OK,
Caveat here then. Chrysotile asbestos is the absolute worst type. It has a jaggedy crystaline structure. DO NOT EVER clean your drums or any other surface associated with this material with compressed air. Obviously this stuff is everywhere when you are driving around out on the road, but no need to get any concentrated exposure in your shop.

Good info and tip...
If possible I use a garden hose and a nozzle to bring the dust to the ground and away from my work area...if there's no H2O around I carefully remove the drum and drop it a couple of times in the grass to liberate any loose brake dust. |
