rear speaker
Hello out there, hope everyone is doing just fine. Ya know, if it wasn't for this forum, I think I'd be lost. OK, does anyone know what size speaker goes in the rear shelf in my 62 Bonni? I looked and it looks like a 6x9, is that right? I'm guessing they are all the same in a 62 Bonni. Whatever size it is, I'm guessing the speaker goes in from the bottom inside the trunk, am I right again? If so, then how do you get a grill on the speaker? Thank you, George

I'm assuming that you have the mesh rear package tray. If you look carefully at the under side of the package tray from inside the trunk you will see that insulation is perforated for easy (yeah right) removal and the package tray has perforated holes for not so easy removal. You can also see oblong slots in the steel deck that supports the package tray. The speakers used special carriage bolts that had a piece of spring steel attached to hold the carriage bolts in place while installing the speaker. There weren't any grilles that went over the speaker in the package tray. I have a repoped rear package tray still in the box if you would like me to take a couple of pics of it and post them or email them to you let me know.

Since your car is a Bonneville, does it have a speaker grille in the middle of the rear seat back? I know they did that in 1961 but I'm not sure about 1962. If it does, the factory rear speaker went there instead of in the package tray; it was a round speaker about 5 1/2 or 6 inches in diameter.

Hello T. Weber, I would appreciate it very much if you could send me some pictures. I'm not to sure what a package tray is and there are no carriage bolts but maybe seeing the pictures I can figure something out on how to mount the speaker. Do you know what size speaker goes there?

Hi Stuart, I wish it had a speaker grill in the middle of the rear seat and that's what I wanted to do but I only seen them in 2 door HT's and convertibles. I was trying to get a rear back seat from a 2 door HT but I was told it would not fit in a 4 door. Thanks anyway Stuart, George

Ah, I forgot your car was a four door. In that case the speaker does go in the package tray.

Hello again T. Weber, I guess the package tray must be the rear shelf. When I got the car there was no mesh. Someone reupholstered the top of the shelf with vinyl.

Bonne62,
I'll pull out my 62 Catalina from the garage and try and get some in trunk photos and I'll pull down the reproduction mesh package tray and get some pics of that for you too. The box with the package tray is in the rafters directly centered over the top of the Catalina. Terry |

FYI, Performance Years sells both mesh and solid replacement package trays. I have a mesh one in my '61, I thought it was pretty good quality.

Hi Stuart, you must of been reading my mind. My next question was going to be where can I get the mesh and replacement trays. I was thinking I was going to have to get it from another Bonni, but you letting me know that PY sells both of them was a great relief. I thank you to sir, George

George, if you get the P-Y package tray, you will need to glue it to some thin plywood or peg board like the factory did or it will warp.
Best to install the speaker when the tray is out. |

Hello Pittsburg 64, thank you very much for the tips. Those are other things I didn't know.I guess I would have to cut a hole in it for the speaker, right?

Hi Matt, I'm don't know if you know this but "Ames Performance Engineering" has the mesh package trays also but I don't see anything about different colors like PY has.

Matt, sorry about that. I just read that when ordering you tell them the color you want.

Can anyone tell me what size speaker goes back there? I looked, and it looks like a 6x9 but I could be wrong.

George, It's a 6 X 9. Try to get a 8-10 Ohm if possible. Yes you will have to make a hole in the plywood.
Both Ames and P-Y sell the REM package tray I believe. I prefer to use P-Y. Or you could use carpet with a chrome grill. |

I to would rather use PY's products also. I think I'm going to use the pegboard instead of plywood. A 6x9 in the back and there is a 4x10 in the front. It's not going to be easy getting one new 4x10 and one new 6x9.

OK folks, I pulled down the mesh package tray (purchased from our sponser) and took some pictures. This is how the package tray comes from them. I've had it for 7+ years and still haven't gotten around to installing it in my 62 Catalina. I thought there was a felt padding under the package tray but now I'm not sure. The trunk of the Catalina is filled with junk and it's 124 deg in the garage now. As you can see the package tray comes with the matching vinyl and padding to fold down and glue behind the back seat. There are speaker holes pre punched for a pair of 6X9's if you care to go that route. I have reduced these pictures 40% to fit here so if you want full size pictures just ask and I'll gladly email them to you. Any questions please ask. There is one picture where the package tray looks grey, I don't know why. I held it to the sun to show the perferations but I just couldn't get the color to come out right. It is the same Aqua package tray.
