Are you asking about the vent line from the gas gauge sender? That should be connected to the return line running back to the tank from the fuel filter. If that is not what you are asking about check your gas cap and see if it is vented or not. Maybe you have the wrong cap.

Default FWIW...

I once had a clogged vent tube and was getting a slight fuel odor before I cleared it with a small piece of wire.

My 69 Firebird used to stink like gas all the time. When sitting. When driving. It ran pretty good but had something wrong. I was getting ready to pull the tank. I finally figured out that gas was seeping out from the inlet. I saw a wet spot. Not even really dripping that I could see but enough to make it smell. It would build up when sitting. But if it sat long enough smell would go away. Probably when it ran out of pressure in the line. I opened it up and replaced in in carb fuel filter (2bbl rochester) and then had a heck of time getting it to seat without dripping but we got there. It took several tries and more pressure than I thought to dare put on it. Yikes!

Boom. No more gas smell. Now I'm not saying yours is leaking but the point is that you need to look in unsuspecting places.

You keep circling back to using a Charcoal Canister. If we tell you what you want
to hear
, and your car (and garage) catch fire, would that smell better or worse?

With our 55+ year old cars with vented fuel tanks, there always seems to be a faint whiff of evaporating fumes when entering a closed location, camel-piss gasoline doesn't help matters

Also, all carburetors are vented to atmosphere at all times and a hot engine will evaporate fumes faster at shut off.
Canīt see how a charcoal canister would solve this?
And i try to park my GTOīs in the garage with less than full tank as i noticed it helps reduce fuel vapors from tank.
Leaving the garage doors open a while before work in the garage is mandatory with these cars inside a small garage.

A pressurized tank can easily lead to a fire.

A few years ago I had to put a new vent tube for the gas tank on my 66 GTO. I never get any gas smell with it sitting in my garage. It's been in there since last October, never moved but started only once since then.... 2 weeks ago. Still no smell of gas. Just fumes from a fart or two.... from me. LOL

Not quite sure I understand from your original question, but is the standpipe for the vent installed on your car, or is the nipple from the tank fill tube open directly to the air?

Without the standpipe thru the trunk floor and back down again, that will probably cause a lot of fumes. It acts somewhat like a sink trap below our sinks in our houses. Keeps the smell down quite a bit, while allowing the tank to properly vent.

Hope that helps.

Mine had the same problem, I could smell gas but had no visible leak. Turns out I had a pin hole in the filler neck and it only happened when I put too much gas in the tank, but that's how I finally found it. If you're vent tube is connected to the looped vent pipe in the trunk and you're smelling gas, you have a leak somewhere. I would drop the tank and have it checked. I fixed mine and haven't smelled gas for 15 years and mine is in the garage and closed for the winter and zero gas smell.
